World of Warcraft: 5 Mask Horrific Visions Breakdown | Game Rant

During the past 2 years, World of Warcraft players have explored and completed everything to do in Zandalar, Kul Tiras, and other Battle for Azeroth locations. But until Shadowlands releases later this year, the current endgame content which includes several achievements and mounts being removed remains relevant. With those goals in mind, individuals looking to get the Faceless One title or gear up for similar challenges need to successfully complete 5 Mask Horrific Visions.

As one of the features released in Patch 8.3, Horrific Visions are what-if futures where N’Zoth has taken over Stormwind and Orgrimmar. While normally easy to complete, inflating the difficulty can reward characters with up to ilvl 470 gear for a full clear. However, clearing these visions on the hardest setting of 5 masks can be difficult for players starting out or even veterans who have experienced hundreds of runs. Although Horrific Visions can be completed in a group, this breakdown is meant for solo players.

The 5 Faceless Masks will unlock as players clear more and more Horrific Visions, making enemies tougher and adding restrictions.

  1. Faceless Mask of the Long Night: Reduce the player’s maximum sanity by 50%. Unlocked by completing all 5 areas in a single Horrific Vision.
  2. Faceless Mask of the Burned Bridge: Void pools appear behind the player whenever they move that drain sanity if stood in. Unlocked by clearing the Valley of Wisdom in Orgrimmar while wearing 1 mask.
  3. Faceless Mask of the Daredevil: Sanity damage caused by enemies is increased by 400%. Unlocked by clearing the Valley of Honor in Orgrimmar while wearing 1 mask.
  4. Faceless Mask of the Pained: Each area will have 2 madnesses instead of 1. Unlocked by clearing the Old Town in Stormwind while wearing 1 mask.
  5. Faceless Mask of Dark Imagination: While under 50% sanity, a faceless one will sometimes spawn and attack the player. Unlocked by clearing the Mage Tower in Stormwind while wearing 1 mask.

While individually annoying, their combined effects can instantly end a run if handled poorly.

During each week, players will be affected by 1 effect, or 2 with the Faceless Mask of the Pained, while in certain Horrific Vision areas.

Tainted Area (Cathedral Square, Valley of Strength)

  1. Bloodthirsty: Occasionally the player deals AOE damage around themselves and heals per target hit.
  2. Desynchronized: Players will switch between a 30% haste or slow.
  3. Promised Power: A zone spawns that increases the player’s damage by 25% if stood in or decreases damage by 10% otherwise.

Corrupted Areas (Dwarven District, Trade District, Valley of Spirits, The Drag)

  1. Dark Delusions: Occasionally a shadow copy appears and chases the player, dealing damage and stunning if it reaches them.
  2. Entomophobia: Bugs appear on the player while in combat and briefly causes loss of control if it reaches 5 stacks unless players jump.
  3. Scorched Feet: Occasionally the player will jump forward and spawn a fire pool that deals damage if stood in.

Lost Areas (Old Town, Mage Quarter, Valley of Wisdom, Valley of Honor)

  1. Haunting Shadows: An image sometimes spawns and fears the player if they remain nearby.
  2. Leaden Foot: Moving in combat will stack a slow that caps at 50% speed.
  3. Split Personality: A circle of images appears with 1 opening, running into the copies will disorient the player.

World of Warcraft players should already have the most important upgrades that extend their sanity and trivialize its loss before attempting a 5 mask run.

  1. Orb Operation Manual: 3 times per run, the player can spawn an orb that restores 10% health and sanity per second for 15 seconds.
  2. Emergency Cranial Defibrillation: When the player reaches 0 health or sanity, they will revive with full health and 500 sanity once per run.
  3. Elite Extermination: Killing an elite enemy restores 200 sanity.
  4. Gift of the Titans: Killing any enemy has a high chance to increase haste and movement speed by 60% while negating all sanity loss for 20 seconds. It has a 60 second cooldown after expiring.

Players automatically get this legendary cloak from Wrathion’s questline prior to unlocking Horrific Visions and it starts by decreasing all sanity loss in Horrific Visions by 20%. On the other hand, a Rank 15 cloak will instead decrease sanity loss by 80% which also applies after the 400% sanity damage increase from wearing the Daredevil mask. However, fully upgrading the cloak from Horrific Vision runs will take between 3-6 weeks on average which means grinding enough currency from Black Empire assaults in Azeroth.

There are 5 foods which have specific effects within Horrific Visions.

  1. Baked Voidfin: Increase movement speed by 20%.
  2. Dubious Delight: Decrease CC duration by 20%.
  3. Ghastly Goulash: Regenerate 2% max health per second.
  4. Grilled Gnasher: Significantly decrease aggro range of enemies.
  5. K’Bab: Restore 100 sanity if eaten for 10 seconds, has a 3 minute cooldown.

During 5 mask runs, Ghastly Goulash is the preferred food to counter increased damage from enemies and eat K’Babs whenever possible to maintain high sanity.

In each Horrific Vision, there is a potion besides a dead NPC near the player’s initial spawn point. That potion and other ones of the same color will drain sanity if used during the run, but there is another potion that restores 100 sanity instead.

Sanity Drain: Black, Blue, Green, Purple, Red

+100 Sanity: Green, Purple, Red, Black, Blue

Furthermore, there are 3 other colored potions that give increased defense, health regen, or even fire breath but the sanity potions are the most important to find or avoid during 5 mask runs.

Because players will be fighting multiple enemies at once during most of their 5 mask run, it is recommended to use an AOE Azerite Essence especially for more single-target classes and specs. One budget suggestion is Purification Protocol since it can stun Aberration type mobs which are commonly found in both Horrific Visions as well as rarely insta-kill anything except the final boss.

In the end, while 5 mask Horrific Visions may seem overwhelming, it’s a matter of experience and practice more than anything. However, the most likely reason to fail a few runs won’t come from boss fights or running out of sanity, but by pulling too much instead. So although time and sanity is more valuable than ever, players should remember to take it slow and they’ll eventually triumph over N’Zoth’s disciples.
