Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, the game subscription service that opens access to dozens of games for a monthly fee, is constantly evolving, with new games coming to and leaving from the service every month. However, as the list of game continues to expand, with titles like Resident Evil 7 coming to Game Pass as soon as September 3, some large titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 will be leaving.
This announcement comes from the Xbox news blog, alongside a number of other titles coming to Xbox Game Pass over the course of the next month. Xbox Head Phil Spencer has recently claimed that big announcements are coming to the game subscription service, although it isn’t quite clear if the new list of games coming and going from the service is exactly what he meant.
A number of games will be leaving Game Pass, including NBA 2K20, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 HD, and most notably Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s the last one on that list that has raised the most eyebrows, as Red Dead Redemption 2 recently joined Game Pass, coming to the subscription service in May, and already leaving only four months later. The game will be leaving on September 7, so Game Pass subscribers who were looking to try out Rockstar’s most recent open-world, cowboy shooter should jump on it quickly, before it’s no longer available.
This isn’t the first time that a Rockstar title has left Game Pass quickly after arriving, with Grand Theft Auto 5 arriving in January, only to leave before Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived in May. So there is somewhat of a pattern here when it comes to Rockstar’s deals with Xbox for giving players a taste of these massive, story-based titles with hours of additional online content. If this is the case, then the next time players see something like Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, or possibly even Bully in the future, it would be best to add it to the top of the list to tackle before it disappears.
With the huge list of games coming to Game Pass over the next month, subscribers certainly aren’t missing out on much, but Red Dead Redemption 2 was likely a huge incentive for a number of players looking to join the subscription service. So, while this might turn off some players, adding games like the new Battletoads and indie darlings like Don’t Starve and Crossing Souls could be big for players looking for smaller experiences.
Additionally, Xbox Game Pass just added the critically-acclaimed Microsoft Flight Simulator for PC, as well as other games like Darksiders Genesis and Spiritfarer, both of which have been well-received. So while it’s disappointing that Xbox Game Pass is losing a game as big as Red Dead Redemption 2, there should still be plenty of worthwhile content for Game Pass subscribers to check out.
