10 Best Devolver Digital Games, According To Metacritic

Publisher Devolver Digital has been around for some time and has been well-regarded among gamers and the industry alike. However, no game by the publisher has reached the level of publicity that Fall Guys has, mostly because of its unique twist on the popular battle royale genre.

Despite this hilarious game getting a lot of love lately, the game is not among the best-reviewed games the company has ever seen. In fact, it isn’t even in the top 10 on Metacritic. But this has less to do with Fall Guys and everything to do with how good of a studio Devolver Digital is. Here are the best games by the company, based on their Metacritic score.

10 Katana ZERO (83)

Developed by Askiisoft, Katana ZERO is a 2D action platformer that came out for the Nintendo Switch and the PC. The game takes place in a post-war dystopian city known as New Mecca. The premise of the IT revolves around an assassin known as Subject Zero who is killing people on behalf of his psychiatrist.

In return, the psychiatrist provides him with drugs that allow him to slow down time and see the future, called “Chronos.” Players must navigate each level and kill everyone they can.

9 Gris (84)

Gris is an adventure platformer by Nomada Studio that is not just fun but beautiful in its storytelling and aesthetics. The game follows a girl named Gris who wakes up in the palm of a crumbling hand that is part of a statue of a woman.

She falls onto the colorless earth and discovers that strange structures require constellations in order to restore color in the world. The goal of the game is to find enough stars in order to form constellations and gain abilities to help deal with obstacles later in the game.

8 Ape Out (84)

With his second game, developer Gabe Cuzzillo turned players into apes. In Ape Out, the goal of the game is for players to escape from gun-wielding guards of a zoo exhibit in each level. This single-player beat ’em up uses a top-down point of view for players to try to figure out how to escape each level.

These maze layouts are randomly generated each time. The game is fast-paced as it’s easy to kill guards and its easy for them to kill the ape. The minimalist art style and jazz music add extra character to the game.

7 GORN (85)

Devolver also dipped its toes into the virtual reality world with GORN, a game by developer Free Lives that puts players in a gladiator-style simulation. Set in the middle of an arena, players can try out different weapons against burly gladiators as they hack and slash their way to glory.

The game uses a physics-based combat engine to make it feel as realistic as possible, which includes making the game as gory as possible. The enemies themselves are unlimited, so players can go nuts for as long as they like.

6 The Messanger (86)

For those who enjoy a classic 8-bit adventure platformer, The Messanger is a great game to give a shot. Developed by Sabotage Studio, players are a ninja that survived an attack by the Demon King.

The ninja is then tasked to deliver a scroll to the top of a mountain. Along the journey, players will meet fun characters like Quarble, who will save the messenger from death as well as a group of mysterious blue-robbed individuals who are looking to rid the world of the king.

5 Hotline Miami (87)

This entry comes right out of the 1980s. Dennaton Games’ Hotline Miami follows a silent protagonist as he receives a message with a rooster mask at his door, with a note saying that he must kill members of the Russian mafia and steal a briefcase.

The man must continue to follow through on these tasks that he receives by following instructions over his answering machine. This top-down shooter requires players to think about how they approach each mission, either with guns blazing or by being stealthy.

4 Enter The Gungeon (87)

What could one person do to try to change the past? In Enter the Gungeon, there’s a gun that does just that. This Dodge Roll-developed game has four possible character types for players to pick between. This includes marine, convict, pilot, and hunter.

This bullet-hell shooter must take on living bullets and gun-like creatures in order to reach their goal of obtaining “The Gun That Can Kill The Past.” While the dungeon layout is pre-established, everything within the dungeons is randomly generated.

3 Reigns (87)

Devolver is also a frequent publisher of mobile games as well. One of their best is Reigns, a strategy game developed by Nerial. The premise of the game revolves around the player becoming a ruler.

Their job as a ruler is to make decisions that affect their society’s four pillars: the people, the wealth, the church, and the military. Players will be presented with decisions that they will need to either swipe left or right on. Decisions will have an impact on the events that occur during the ruler’s tenure.

2 The Talos Principle (88)

The Talos Principle is one of the most critically-acclaimed puzzle games that is underrated among the genre. This Croteam game puts players in the role of an unnamed android who must complete puzzles to collect sigils for an entity known as Elohim.

However, players begin to learn secrets about the world the android is exploring and begin to face a decision as to whether or not to defy Elohim. Reminiscent of the Portal series, the story along with fun puzzles are an excellent combination.

1 Downwell (91)

The best game Devolver Digital ever published was just a phone game for a day before it was added to PC 24 hours later. Ojiro “Moppin” Fumoto’s Downwell is a roguelike vertical scrolling platforming and shooting game where players are Welltaro, a brave man who decided to explore a nearby well knowing that there might be monsters to deal with.

Welltaro has gun boots that allow him to shoot at enemies beneath him. The game is also highly customizable and has shops where Welltaro can be upgraded.
