When Bethesda launched The Elder Scrolls universe, fans got transferred to the vast and expansive realm of Tamriel. In this high fantasy world, players get greeted with warring armies, scheming factions, and an open-world deserving of their attention. Moreover, its five main series titles and The Elder Scrolls Online MMO proved there’s no shortage of things to explore in Tamriel’s lands. However, players do need to have the right gear to aid them in their journey.
Thanks to Tamriel’s expansive world, players can search the realm for all manners of armor. As such, players have access to staple cloth robes and leather armor, or even heavy plate sets. However, more adventurous players know Tamriel hides its own set of rare armor – from gear forged in the depths of Oblivion, to regal armor once wielded by elven royalty. Just which of these armors are worthy of the player’s attention? And more importantly, just which of these armor sets deserve more attention?
10 Iconic: Ancient Nord Armor
Thanks to Skyrim‘s popularity, almost any gamer would recognize the Ancient Nord Armor. Moreover, thanks to its consistent appearance in ads and Skyrim‘s cover material, it’s perhaps the most common armor set associated with both Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls. In-game, Ancient Nord Armor serves as a heavy armor variant of the Iron Armor.
Moreover, despite its rather “plain” appearance, Ancient Nord Armor offers decent defenses to the player. Interestingly, the theme of the Ancient Nord Armor also remains consistent with the Viking theme Skyrim wanted to capture.
9 Underrated: Dwarven Armor
Players who don Dwemer or Dwarven Armor for the first time will likely realize the depth of detail The Elder Scrolls placed in its equipment. Despite being “ordinary” armor, people seek Dwarven Armor thanks to their resistance to corrosion in addition to their signature Dwemer make. As such, this armor set appears in all The Elder Scrolls games.
Regardless of the title, players will remember Dwarven Armor for their bulky and heavy appearance. Moreover, despite its weight, the level of Dwarven craftsmanship reflects both in its appearance and qualities. In contrast to the sleek Elven Armor and the regal Imperial Armor, Dwarven Armor doesn’t joke around with its focus on protection.
8 Iconic: Daedric Armor
Wouldn’t it feel awesome to wear an armor of dread? In The Elder Scrolls, players can do just that by wearing its iconic Daedric Armor. This armor set appears in Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim – and all its appearance shares the same motif. Thanks to its Daedric nature, Daedric Armor share blood-red and ebony color schemes, an abundance of spikes, and a focus on a sinister appearance.
In the lore, it’s said that Daedric Armor contains the spirit of a Daedra forged into its plates. As such, Daedric Armor wearers will find themselves forever plagued by the voices of the Daedric soul inside this armor. Technicality-wise, Daedric Armor is either the strongest or one of the strongest heavy armors in any title it’s in.
7 Underrated: Chitin Armor
Players who think of “armor” shouldn’t necessarily confine themselves to pieces of cloth, leather, or plate. In Morrowind, Chitin Armor derives its appearance from layers of insect shells and resin. As such, Chitin Armor gives a more insectoid appearance to the character, thanks to its multiple circular plates. Interestingly, Chitin Armor stays true to the “exotic” nature of the province of Morrowind, compared to the high fantasy nature of Cyrodil and the Nordic theme of Skyrim.
Interestingly, Chitin Armor also offers higher defense compared to leather armor from Tamriel’s western provinces. Warriors in Morrowind can find this armor in Vvardenfell, although more commonly used by Ashlanders. Moreover, Chitin Armor also makes an appearance in Skyrim‘s Dragonborn expansion.
6 Iconic: Dark Brotherhood Armor
Players who want to focus on creating a stealthy character in The Elder Scrolls might not love the bulky nature of the Leather Armor. Thankfully, joining the Dark Brotherhood might provide them with the solution they need. If they wear the Dark Brotherhood Armor, they gain a sleek and awesome armor perfect for their assassinations and stealthy pursuits.
Appearing in Tribunal, Oblivion, and Skyrim, Dark Brotherhood Armor serves as formal wear for people officially indoctrinated to the order of assassins. Interestingly, Dark Brotherhood Armor shares similar themes across its appearances. Aside from sleek black leather, Dark Brotherhood Armor usually features a lot of straps, a cowl or a goggled helm, and padding.
5 Underrated: Indoril Armor
Players who encountered the Tribunal Temple’s Ordinators have seen these ornate pieces of armor. These Ordinators, who serve the Tribunal Temple, uphold both Imperial and Temple law in various Temple districts. They’re tasked to enforce the law to Temple worshippers and fight the Daedra. While most Ordinators are members of House Indoril (hence the armor’s name), the masked nature of the Ordinators makes them mysteirous.
Despite the ornate and regal nature of the armor, players are advised against wearing it near Ordinators. In fact, Ordinators attack players were seen wearing the armor, as Ordinators hold Indoril Armor extremely sacred. Interestingly, Tribunal features a variant of this armor set called Her Hand’s Armor, worn by the Temple’s best guardians who serve Almalexia herself.
4 Iconic: Glass Armor
Glass Armor remains one of the most unique armor variants in The Elder Scrolls. Aside from its green color scheme, different titles adapt the Glass Armor concept in many ways. As such, players can encounter Glass Armor in one title and see a completely different variant in another game. For instance, Glass Armor in Morrowind appears extremely exotic, with a uniquely-shaped helm and multiple glass protrusions. Meanwhile, Glass Armor in Oblivion has a more curved motif.
Despite its name, Glass Armor doesn’t have”literal” glass. In its appearances in Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, TES Online, and Blades, Glass Armor is made of Malachite Ore. Thanks to Malachite Ore, Glass Armor Sets have an innate resistance to lightning. Moreover, they remain popular for their flexibility. As such, Glass Armor looks bulky despite being light armor.
3 Underrated: Adamantium Armor
Players who discover the many types of armors in The Elder Scrolls know they can obtain these at any point in the game. Unfortunately, Tribunal players will soon learn that Adamantium Armor is rare armor that’s difficult to craft. After all, players need 45 Adamantium Ores to craft a full Adamantium Armor set. Unfortunately, only 20 raw Adamantium rocks exist in the game.
However, acquiring the Adamantium Armor set grants players one of the strongest medium armors in the game. For instance, of the set, the Adamantium Helmet serves as the strongest medium helmet in the title. However, the rest of the Adamantium Armor pieces lose only to the Stalhrim Armor in terms of efficiency. Thankfully, players can obtain the rest of the armor through certain plugins or killing some relevant NPCs.
2 Iconic: Ebony Armor
Players looking for a “dark knight” look can rely on Ebony Armor to get the job done. After all, it’s consistently given a dark aura in all of its appearances across all franchise titles. Moreover, people attribute Ebony Armor’s rarity to Ebony, a substance commonly associated with the gods. Due to its hardness, crafters have a hard time acquiring Ebony.
However, its innate strength reflects in its armor, which always comes with unique designs. Most depictions of Ebony Armor show it as black armor with golden details. Each iteration remains consistent in giving an ominous or dark aura.
1 Underrated: Stalhrim Armor
Players who acquire Stalhrim or Ice Armor in Morrowind and Skyrim might appreciate its crystalline beauty. After all, its ice-like appearance represents its base material, the mineral Stalhrim. Also known as enchanted ice, both Atmorans and Nords used Stalhrim’s frost properties to protect the dead in burial rituals. Unfortunately, only the Skaal got to preserve the secrets of crafting Stalhrim armor.
In Morrowind, players can acquire Stalhrim or Ice Armor in the Bloodmoon expansion. Meanwhile, in Skyrim, players can acquire Stalhrim armor through some vendors and loot or via a special quest. In the latter, resist frost enchantments work with 25-percent more potency with Stalhrim armor, courtesy of the ore’s properties.
