Instead, the trailer showcased a real-world interview with a man earning about a Soviet spy who has infiltrated Western intelligence.

For those who do not know, the man featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is named Yuri Bezmenov,  a KGB defector who played a silent yet important role during the Cold War. The “Know Your History” trailer features Yuri Bezmenov, also known by his alias, Tomas David Schuman, who was a Soviet journalist who defected to Canada during the Cold War. He was born in 1939 and at the age of 17, he attended the Institute of Oriental Languages, which is a KGB-run institution. During his time at the school, Bezmenov became interested in the history of India, which was encouraged by military officers who oversaw his mandatory military training given that they often look for young students who have the potential to become international operatives.

In 1965, Bezmenov worked for a state-controlled media organization and was talked to write propaganda for foreign distribution alongside various tasks revolving international relations. He then became an official informer for the Soviets specializing in spreading misinformation and Bezmenov also helped in establishing a strong propaganda network in India, where he once lived from 1963 to 1965.

Eventually, Bezmenov started to question his line of work, especially the effect that it is having on the world. In 1970, Bezmenov attempted to defect to the West by blending himself in a tour group, which eventually took him to Greece. It is there where Bezmenov contacted the CIA and was able to convince the organization of his genuine desire to defect. The CIA helped Bezmenov to reach Canada and it is there where he attended the University of Toronto to become a journalist.

The debut trailer of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War showed footage of Bezmenov’s interview with G. Edward Griffin in 1984. In the interview, Bezmenov discussed the key points of how Russia attempted to overthrow the United States. He discussed the four key stages of the Soviet subversion model which consist of demoralization, destabilization, crisis, and normalization.

Bezmenov went into detail on how these four key stages would play an important role to the slow takeover of society. In conclusion, Bezmenov revealed that the only way to stop this process is to educate people about it so that they would remain vigilant. Should the education of people fail, Bezmenov believes that a country will soon lose its most important freedoms.

At the moment, it is difficult to predict just how Bezmenov’s speech would play an important role in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. However, the title of the game alone is already an obvious indicator that it will focus entirely on East vs. West struggle. Moreover, elements of the four key points that Bezmenov discussed in the interview will likely appear in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War in some form, and may also be an indication that the upcoming game won’t rely on outright warfare as much.

However, given that this is still a Call of Duty game, it is likely that there will still be plenty of action. Luckily, players won’t have to wait for too long to know more about the upcoming game given that a full reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which will likely show in-game footage, is scheduled on August 26th.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is now in development.
