Capcom Issues Odd Punishment for Street Fighter 5 Player Outburst

Many Street Fighter 5 professional players have continued to participate in tournaments online during the coronavirus pandemic. Since these players can’t meet in person to compete, there is a difference in atmosphere and doesn’t have as reliable a connection in the game. Because of this, Victor “Punk” Woolsey suffered an unfortunate defeat and responded poorly. Because of the player’s actions, Capcom issued him an odd punishment.

Since the release of Street Fighter 5 in 2016, the game has continued to have issues with its online play. Though Capcom has made several attempts to fix these problems, the situation is still not optimal, and this has only become more obvious since official competitive tournaments were moved to the online format. Because of this, there were some unfortunate connection issues in a recent tournament, which spawned a host of other problems for the professions.

Though Punk is one of the best Street Fighter 5 players out there, he still lost against fellow player Alex Myers in a Capcom Pro Tour event. Myers is also a highly skilled player, but Punk was still frustrated by the lose and took out his emotions in a public way. Since he was streaming, his actions were broadcasted to thousands of viewers. Punk blamed the terrible connection on Myers, since he had lagged in every game so far that tournament. Despite this issue, Punk was not allowed to replay the match. He immediately typed, “F*** literally everyone running this s***,” in the Discord the tournament was using. Along with this, Punk also called Myers a “b****” twice over Twitter, though those tweets have since been deleted.

Capcom is not happy with Punk’s actions and has issued punishment. Due to his “unsportsmanlike conduct,” the gaming company is mandating that he will be starting the next tournament in the loser’s bracket instead of being outright banned from the tournament, since there is only one more chance for Punk to qualify for the Capcom Cup. Many other players have taken issue with this action, saying that lesser-skilled players will be given a better chance than average while also making it more difficult for players who lose and have to face Punk. The players have also pointed out that this punishment is harsher than what has been given to players who have physically threatened their competition in the past.

Capcom hasn’t spoken up since the other players have raised complaints against the issued punishment. Hopefully the company will work on fixing the online connection problems in this and future Street Fighter games, especially since Street Fighter 6 seems to be right around the corner.

Street Fighter 5 is available for PC and PS4.
