Ubisoft Collector’s Editions for Xbox One Games Won’t Have Physical Discs

Digital games are quickly becoming the new norm, as physical games slowly become a smaller portion of total game sales. Even the PS5 is offering a digital-only option when it launches, for those that no longer care for physical discs. Sony isn’t alone, either, as Ubisoft will be including digital codes with Xbox One Collector’s edition games instead of a physical disc.

In a short post, Ubisoft detailed the change, stating that its Xbox One customers will receive digital codes with games, though it didn’t elaborate on the specific reason for the switch. The rest of the package will still be delivered through standard mail, so that process should remain the same as it was before the change.

It seems likely that the change is due to the Xbox Smart Delivery system, which allows players to upgrade the Xbox One version of the game to the Xbox Series X version, but Ubisoft didn’t explicitly state that. Changes to the US Postal system could also be having an effect, though if that were the case, Ubisoft would change both the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the games to digital codes, ensuring that all players can at least play the game on release day.

The change does leave some other unanswered questions too. Ubisoft didn’t mention when it would be issuing the game codes, so it isn’t clear when fans can expect them. Ideally, they would become available on the pre-load date, allowing players to begin the download early so that they can start playing right as the game is released, rather than waiting for the game to download on day one.

Ubisoft specifically mentions Assassin’s Creed ValhallaFar Cry 6, and Watchdogs Legion for the change, though, from the language in the post, it seems that this will be the process moving forward for Xbox. Somewhat ironically, all three of the Collector’s editions mentioned come with a special steelbook case meant to hold a physical copy of the game.

For some, the move may prove unpopular, particularly those in areas with limited download speeds. It is a sudden change for the company, and while it does make sense why it’s happening, there are undoubtedly those that would prefer a choice between the digital and physical versions of the game, even if choosing the physical option means giving up the free upgrade. It’s an odd shift, but one that will likely become an increasingly regular occurrence as time presses on.
