Voice Actor of Marvel’s Avengers Modok Gives New Glimpse of the Character

It’s been known for some time that Marvel’s Avengers will see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes throw down with one of their oldest enemies from the comics, MODOK, the Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing. So far, though, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics haven’t given fans a real good look at how the classic villain will appear in the game. That is, until this week.

Square and Crystal Dynamics have been fairly forthcoming with revealing the broader story beats of the game’s story, including MODOK’s role as its primary antagonist. Previous trailers for Marvel’s Avengers have confirmed that players will first encounter him as scientist George Tarleton, head of the organization AIM, and that he’s out to rid the world of superpowered people, including the Avengers. This is what eventually leads him to transform into the super-intelligent giant floating head comic fans are familiar with.

Up until now, the most that had been shown of MODOK was a closeup of his large face, but now fans have a proper look at the game’s version, courtesy of voice actor Usman Ally. In announcing that he’s playing both Tarleton and MODOK on Twitter, Ally shared a screenshot from the game that shows the villain in his entirety. It’s certainly an interesting take on MODOK’s iconic look. While he’s traditionally depicted as just a giant head with tiny limbs sticking out of his hover chair, here he actually has a proper body underneath, even if it’s still dwarfed by his head and weaponized chair.

This wasn’t all Ally had to share about playing MODOK. In an interview with ComicBook.com, he expressed his surprise at being offered the role and touched upon Tarleton’s character in Marvel’s Avengers a little. “In terms of how George becomes this creature, this thing and how so much of it is driven by his ambition to help people, I think there is a genuine belief that what he is doing is for the betterment of human beings and that strong, strong sense of self and his position in society, wanting to do more, is what continues to drive him. I found that to be some of the really fascinating stuff and how that gets blasted with one’s ego or one’s own insecurities coming to the fore. He’s a very complex character.”

Perhaps because of the strangeness of his character and design, MODOK hasn’t appeared much in any prominent way outside of the comics, being overshadowed by villains like Loki and Thanos in wider Avengers media. Not that Marvel hasn’t tried, as it once planned to feature MODOK in its cancelled live-action New Warriors series. Luckily for his fans, he’s finally getting his time in the spotlight.

Marvel’s Avengers will launch on September 4 for PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions to follow at a later date.
