One of the first big teases of DC FanDome, the Black Adam film made a bit of a splash when Dwayne Johnson tweeted out the very first sneak preview of himself playing the character in anticipation of his appearance during the FanDome panel. Now that the panel is over, Dwayne Johnson has given fans a much better sense of what the film will look like, including a possible hint at a meeting between Black Adam and Superman.
Black Adam getting his own movie was a bit of a strange pull, but made sense after the success of Shazam! With Billy Batson and company firmly established in the DC cinematic universe, giving one of his most famous rivals a film of his own seems like a solid plan for setting up further films. It seems those plans currently involve setting up Black Adam as a dangerous foe, who does not exercise the same restraint with his powers, with Dwayne Johnson describing him as an anti-hero, potentially even a villain, wondering out loud whether he could be friends with a character like Superman, implying that the two might have some sort of interaction in the future.
In the original comics, Black Adam was essentially just Shazam, but evil. He had the same powers from the same source, and hated Billy Batson for being chosen over him as a more worthy successor. Over time, different writers would redefine his personality and backstory, making him into an antihero or sometimes a reformed villain. As of now, it is unknown exactly how the writers plan to tweak the story for the upcoming film, but it would seem that things are sticking fairly close to his basic comic origin, being a hero Kahndaq that is exiled and re-emerges in the modern era. The panel closed out with another teaser from Johnson, letting the Justice League know that Black Adam intends to change the balance of power in the DC Universe.
Dwayne Johnson has been tapped to play the character for some time, with his participation being announced far before any other details were made available. Though it wasn’t addressed exactly how the film will fit into the current continuity, it is known that Black Adam has been planned since at least the production of Shazam! due to a deleted scene that strongly hints at the impending arrival of the villain/antihero. However, the failure of several major projects including Justice League and Batman v Superman seem to have left things up in the air, and DC has eased off on explicit crossovers for the time being. Hopefully Black Adam will be another great film to round out DC’s streak of successful solo superhero stories.
Black Adam is slated for theater release on December 22, 2021.
