Mortal Shell is a game that is not afraid to wear its inspirations on its sleeve. Born from the legacy of Dark Souls and FromSoftware, the new title from Cold Symmetry is trying to scratch that “maso-core” itch. But while the game has a lot in common with Souls, it also deviates from the formula quite a bit.
One area that Mortal Shell tries to mix up is fast travel. Some players might not even realize that there is fast travel in Mortal Shell but there is. It’s not as fully featured as a typical fast travel but it’s well worth unlocking, even if it requires some effort on the part of the player.
The first step when it comes to unlocking fast travel in Mortal Shell is gaining access to Sester Genessa’s store. Initially, visiting Sester Genessa is a way for players to unlock abilities on their various Shells (the armor that serve as “classes” in the game) and she acts as a respawn point should players die.
However, once players fully upgrade a single Shell, they will unlock the ability to trade with Sester Genessa. The one caveat is that the player needs to be wearing the fully upgraded Shell in order to access the Trade option; if they visit her in a non-upgraded Shell the game will present the usual “Sip Tar” option.
Within Sister Genessa’s store are some useful items like Effigies for switching Shells on the fly and healing items like Mortal Tokens. But the item that everyone should target as early as they can is the Ornate Mask.
The Ornate Mask is an unlimited use item that will allow Mortal Shell players to travel to Sister Genessa at any of her locations, with some limitations. Whether it’s right before a boss or in the middle of the main Fall grim area, players can zip to Sister Genessa immediately. And because it is very useful, the Ornate Mask does not come cheap. Players will need to trade 30 Glimpses in exchange for the mask, so it’s best to farm Glimpses at every opportunity.
Developer Cold Symmetry has not made the Ornate Mask all-powerful, though; there are some limits to the item’s use. First of all, players can only travel to Sister Genessa if they have already visited her in the given location. Players will not be able to skip right to the save point in front of each boss fight and basically skip a lot of legwork of the game.
As well, the Ornate Mask will not work if players are carrying either of the three Glands in the game. These Glands are given after defeating the main boss of a given area and will change up the trip back to the Prisoner in Fallgrim. Because that “trip home” is a curated experience for the player character, Mortal Shell will not allow using the Ornate Mask with the Gland equipped.
Getting enough Tar and Glimpses to fully max out a Shell and then having another 30 to trade for the Ornate Mask is going to take some time. Most players are going to get through the majority of Mortal Shell before they even unlock the ability to trade with Sister Genessa, especially if they have been trying out different Shells or using Glimpses on different Shells. However, if fast travel in Mortal Shell is the goal it’s best to pick one Shell and stick with it. Or at worst, the Ornate Mask and fast travel will be useful on a New Game Plus run.
Mortal Shell is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
