Film adaptions of video games aren’t particularly well-received by either audiences or critics, but Sonic the Hedgehog stands out as one of the best. This might be why Paramount is bringing the movie back to theaters for a limited time. Many might consider it a touch too early to be returning to cinemas, but for those who don’t, tickets are available now.
The Sonic the Hedgehog official Twitter account made the announcement that the film is heading back to the big screen, stating that the release will be limited and only available to the United States and Canada. Amid the ongoing global pandemic, theaters are reopening with precautions in place, but that might not be enough for everyone to feel completely safe just yet. The Twitter account also posted a link to tickets, which will direct those interested to local theaters for dates and times.
When the first Sonic the Hedgehog trailer released, audiences were skeptical the film would do justice to the franchise or to the character, especially due to Sonic’s original, horrifying design. But the studio took it back to square one, redesigning Sonic to look more like he does in the video game, and the movie ended up doing very well. So well, in fact, it was in fierce, record-breaking competition with another popular video game film, Detective Pikachu. Like Sonic himself, it zoomed ahead and became the biggest opening for a movie based on a video game. The film’s director made a point to thank fans for the record-breaking opening.
Part of the movie’s success was due to nostalgia and the popularity of the character, but the studio also did its homework, presenting a Sonic that was familiar and likable. Shortly after, the director announced that a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog is in development and will release in 2022.
