The upcoming Beyond Light expansion will bring wide-ranging changes to Destiny 2. For new players, a new beginner’s storyline will be implemented to ease them into the massive game.
In the latest TWAB article, Bungie gave comprehensive lists about what Destiny 2 players can expect after November 10. With the game’s original campaign, Red War, also gone, fans had been wondering if and how this gap would be filled.
The team is crafting a new and more fleshed out origin story for Guardians joining Destiny 2 after Beyond Light. This takes place on the Cosmodrome like Shadowkeep and Destiny 1‘s campaign intro, and will be free to play for everyone.
It will serve as a better introduction to Destiny than the current, quite short mission on the Cosmodrome. New players will be able to learn more about the game’s details from gameplay mechanics to worldbuilding via this experience.
This is good news even for veterans, as some have noticed that, since Shadowkeep, so many newcomers have been ill-prepared for what the game has to offer. Plus, this addition further justifies the full return of Cosmodrome and perhaps is a hint that this old zone will be involved in the stories to come.
So many of the players that have joined the community in the past year don’t know what the story of Destiny is about, which is a shame. Some fans have reported on Reddit that they were surprised to find out there were (free) story campaigns after they’ve already sunken hours into the game.
Lore-wise, this does beg the question, will there be two canon origin stories for “the Guardian”? Since, in the game’s lore, the person who has defeated Ghaul, Oryx, Xol and all the other villains of Destiny is indeed the same person. In other words, the player character is an official character in the lore.
But, if there’s going to be a new origin story for Guardians after Beyond Light, characters created past November 10 could be recognized as separate from “the Guardian” in the lore. Or, depending on when in the timeline this new Cosmodrome origin story takes place, Bungie could simply be retconning the existing Guardian origin story all the way from 2014.
One last thing to note is that Forsaken and Shadowkeep story campaigns will remain fully playable in year 4 if players purchase their respective expansions.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is available on November 10 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
