It has been almost a full year since the last general Nintendo Direct. While there have been multiple Nintendo Direct Mini and Indie World presentations, Nintendo has been almost deafeningly silent for the majority of 2020. The company has even taken the surprising approach of announcing full games such as Paper Mario: The Origami King and Pikmin 3 Deluxe via social media platforms such as Twitter and YouTube. That seems like it could be changing as, according to VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb, Nintendo is gearing up for its first general Nintendo Direct presentation since September 2019 very soon.
Earlier this week VentureBeat’s Jeff Grubb, who has recently reported on many events that have taken place over the summer early, appeared on the newest episode of GamesBeat’s podcast GamesBeat Decides to speculate on when the next Nintendo Direct will take place. Grubb stated on the podcast, “I’ve heard a few things and I think there’s a strong possibility that there is a Nintendo Direct next week, on Friday, the 28th. That’s the date I’ve heard.” However, Jeff has recently taken to Twitter to clarify that this Friday’s Nintendo presentation may not be a general Direct, but that one is on the way.
Retweeting YouTuber SpawnWave’s newest video speculating on Grubb’s comments, Jeff Grubb stated that “This is a pretty good summation of what you should know about the upcoming Nintendo event. It’s weird that August 28 is a Friday, so I’m not confident at all that’s a general Direct. It could be any number of things. But do expect a Direct equivalent by the middle of September.” Grubb later continued, “If I had to bet, this thing next week is probably something else. So please tone down the expectations. And then if it is a general, we can all be pleasantly surprised. But to repeat myself for the sake of clarity: I expect a bigger event soon after.”
While it seems inevitable that Nintendo is planning for some sort of presentation in the next week, Grubb has tried to make it clear that this week’s event will most likely not be the general Nintendo Direct that fans have been waiting for and may very likely be another Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase event, like the one presented last month which revealed Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne HD and showcased Shin Megami Tensei 5. Grubb has also mentioned numerous times that he believes Nintendo will be announcing a Super Mario 35th anniversary collection very soon featuring all of the main 3D entries in the series, which we will likely see at one of these events with an impending release.
If these rumors are to believed, some sort of Nintendo event is scheduled to take place on August 28th 2020, with another following before the middle of September.
