The Van Der Linde Gang is central to everything that happens in Red Dead Redemption 2. And the crew is filled with 26 members who all have their own distinct personalities. Naturally, there are some unsavory people among the bunch because a person’s level of kindness isn’t a priority for an outlaw group.
What is important, though, is how much they contribute. Nobody wants to risk their life just to share food and resources with those who do nothing. The Van Der Linde Gang has a mix of useful people and ones who are simply taking up space. But how valuable is each individual member?
26 Molly O’Shea
Because of her romantic relationship with Dutch, Molly doesn’t have to do any work around camp or go on missions. And, the special treatment she receives makes her incredibly unpopular with everyone else.
25 Reverend Swanson
Swanson’s perpetually drunken state means he can’t lend a hand to his gang mates for most of the game. In fact, he’s a hindrance, evidenced by the time Arthur has to save him from being hit by a train. Even when sober, he still doesn’t contribute.
24 Jack Marston
As Jack is only a small child, it’s understandable that his usefulness is limited. He’s too young to do many chores, and he certainly can’t help rob trains. At least his youthful exuberance brings the mood up.
23 Joe
Joe only joins the gang shortly before its demise; therefore, he doesn’t get long to prove his worth. During his short tenure, he does take part in the robbery of the Army’s train, yet only in a small role.
22 Cleet
Like Joe, Cleet joins the gang late in its existence and only helps with the Army train robbery. However, Cleet is a bigger part of that mission than Joe. He jumps aboard the train and collects the money alongside Arthur and Sadie.
21 Kieran Duffy
Kieran is someone who could do more if the gang allowed it, yet as a former O’Driscoll, he’s never fully trusted. Still, he does lead the gang to an O’Driscoll camp that they’re able to wipe out, and he later spends significant time looking after everyone’s horses.
20 Uncle
If he could get away with it, Uncle would do no work whatsoever. Yet despite his laziness and his mysterious lumbago illness, others occasionally force him to go on missions. And he’s relatively adept at robbing and killing when he isn’t sleeping.
19 Leopold Strauss
Strauss’s level of usefulness is difficult to determine. His main contribution comes from his loansharking.
Yet, it’s unclear how much money he makes through that endeavor, especially as he often targets people who don’t have the means to pay their debts. Although, he must make something from his immoral business.
18 Josiah Trelawny
The smooth-talking Trelawny is a double-edged sword. He frequently needs to be rescued, but he also provides the gang with valuable information, most notably when he divulges Sean’s whereabouts.
17 Karen Jones
In the first half of the game, Karen does plenty of chores and is even the mastermind behind the Valentine bank heist. Unfortunately, when things start going wrong, she doesn’t do much besides drink, and becomes a belligerent alcoholic.
16 Tilly Jackson
Tilly doesn’t often get involved with the outlaw side of things. Although, she’s no slacker as she’s regularly doing work around camp. And when the gang starts to fall apart, she proves her worth by protecting Jack.
15 Mary-Beth Gaskill
Despite her sweet nature, Mary-Beth isn’t afraid to help with illegal activities. In Valentine, she obtains a lead on a train to rob, and later she can be a distraction for a stagecoach robbery. She spends most of her time helping with chores, though.
14 Abigail Roberts/Marston
Abigail’s primary responsibility is to look after and raise her son, Jack. But she does other things too, such as clean and help prepare meals. Her work with the distraction during the Saint Denis bank heist proves she’s not above breaking the law either.
13 Micah Bell
As a person, Micah is terrible, but he’s a skilled outlaw. His talents are particularly valuable during the gang’s later missions, regardless of his true allegiance. However, he does tend to avoid work when he can. Plus, his hot-headedness regularly causes issues for everyone.
12 Sean MacGuire
The cocky Sean is one of the least experienced criminals in the gang. Nevertheless, he usually does a good job when relied upon, as shown when he helps Arthur burn down the Grays’ tobacco fields. His overconfidence can sometimes lead to problems, though.
11 Lenny Summers
Lenny is similar to Sean in that he’s also younger and more inexperienced than most others in the gang. Yet, he’s smarter than Sean and less cocky.
Although, he still sometimes overestimates his own abilities, like the time he intends to rob a stagecoach on his own. Still, more often than not, he’s a reliable person to bring on a mission.
10 Simon Pearson
Pearson’s job is one of the most important as he’s the cook. Every night, he prepares a big pot of stew for everyone, using the ingredients at his disposal. And when he’s not cooking, he can craft things like satchels and new decorative items for the camp on Arthur’s instruction.
9 Javier Escuella
As a dependable and skilled gun, Javier is a very handy man to have on missions. Dutch, in particular, must love him as he gets the job done, and he’s fiercely loyal. Sadly, though, he doesn’t contribute much when it comes to finding and planning jobs.
8 Susan Grimshaw
Dutch is the leader, but Miss Grimshaw acts as the manager of the camp. Her questionable motivation methods and no-nonsense attitude keep the women of the gang focused on their work. Plus, she’s an effective killer when she needs to be, as Tilly’s kidnappers find out.
7 Bill Williamson
One of the most underrated members of the gang is Bill Williamson. What he lacks in brains, he makes up for in work ethic as he participates in so many jobs throughout the game. Some of which he organizes and plans himself. Usually, he’s skilled enough to complete them too.
6 John Marston
Sometimes John can be a liability to the gang, such as when he needs to be saved by wolves or rescued from prison. Yet, most of the time, his adept gun skills and willingness to help out make him a valuable member of the team. He even sets up multiple jobs.
5 Charles Smith
Charles has plenty of good attributes, including his strength, hunting skills, and combat capabilities. But his most useful trait is his consistency. The man rarely ever makes a mistake, which is unusual for a member of the Van Der Linde Gang.
4 Sadie Adler
During RDR2, nobody rises through the ranks of the gang as much as Sadie. She starts as a meal preparer and quickly becomes one of the best gunslingers in the crew. Her true value is discovered when she almost single-handedly looks after everyone while the likes of Dutch and Arthur are stuck in Guarma.
3 Dutch Van Der Linde
The gang wouldn’t even exist without its leader and namesake, Dutch Van Der Linde. He makes most of the plans and recruits nearly all of the gang’s members. And the hands-on leader regularly goes out in the field alongside his underlings too. Unfortunately, he isn’t good at handling failure as it messes with his mind and makes him unstable, which creates problems for everyone around him.
2 Hosea Matthews
A true conman, Hosea, is the best at gathering leads and outsmarting his targets. Although, his ability to keep Dutch in line is his most valuable skill. As evident later in the game, Dutch struggles to keep things together without his wise second-in-command by his side.
1 Arthur Morgan
As the protagonist, Arthur participates in far more missions than anyone else. And in many of them, he acts as the leader and gives out orders to the others. But that is just one of his many contributions to the crew, the others include, managing the money, providing extra ingredients for the stew, and rescuing fellow gang members who are in trouble.
