Rockstar put a considerable amount of work into the life-like aspects of Red Dead Redemption 2, often making sure to lean on the side of realism over standard quality of life mechanics that can sometimes spoil the immersion. This has led some players to add functional and hilarious mods to Red Dead 2 or use mechanics in unconventional ways in order to live out some of the wilder fantasies that the realism doesn’t otherwise allow for.
Shared to Reddit by user u/deathbylumbago, one player has found a way to quickly drive through Red Dead Redemption 2 while having the freedom to completely interact with the world around Arthur Morgan. At the time of this writing, the video of u/deathbylumbago’s new technique has already reached almost 2,000 upvotes for the players new take on easier transportation in Red Dead 2.
The new technique allows the player to set a carriage to drive itself down the road, letting the player perform a drive-by on an O’Driscoll hideout as the horses pull the vehicle on there own. In order to pull off this feat, all the player has to do is exploit the way that horses behave when they’ve been startled by sudden violence or gunfire. Essentially, standing in the back of a carriage being pulled by a horse and firing off rounds from a pistol will send the Red Dead 2‘s realistic animals charging forward, taking the player along for the ride.
As a result of utilizing the mechanics in this way, players can quickly shoot down waves of enemies while making their escape at the same time, given that the carriage doesn’t crash like it does in the video. This technique mostly involves exploiting the horse AI in Red Dead Redemption 2, and actually landing the shots on enemies while flying by takes either some serious skill, or a lot of dead eye usage. So it may take a couple tries before players are able to pull off a flawless drive-by as the startled horse takes them charging down the road, and even more before the auto-driving carriage takes them to safety.
This is the type of ingenuity that players in Rockstar’s open-world titles often wind up putting on display as these games draw them to dedicate hours to exploring their massive worlds. As long as players aren’t hacking Red Dead Redemption 2 in order to push the game’s limits, finding these exploits is a great way for the community to make games within the game as players wait for more updates.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
