Studio Bethesda’s smash success, Skyrim, has been out since 2011. Its massive world and seemingly unending quests have kept players busy for nearly a decade. But there’s more to Skyrim than the world the developers made. Thanks to a thorough and successful modding scene, content in Skyrim is at an all-time high.
From mods that add new and dynamic NPCs to systems that reinvent the game, Skyrim’s modding community has been hard at work. In order to get the most out of the game, players will need to download specific mods that will transform Skyrim from a ten-year-old RPG, into the next-gen genre-defining game it always had the potential to be.
10 Immersive Armors
The Armor of vanilla Skyrim gets the job done. It’s useful, and that’s about all there is to say about it. The Immersive Armors mod adds the variety and designs that fans have so desperately craved. With fifty-five new sets of armor, tons of non-set helmet options, and nearly four hundred new shields, this mod allows for a truly customized look for every player. The mod also makes each item craftable, upgradeable, enchantable, and openly found in treasure chests, on fallen enemies, and as quest rewards. The mod also adds eye patches, earrings, capes, and scarves for any fashion-minded Dragonborn.
9 Lore Weapons Expansion
Skyrim’s weapons system is pretty rudimentary, to put it mildly. With only a few options, melee combat is just outclassed by the more interesting possibilities of magic. The Lore Weapons Expansion mod adds all of the lore-friendly weaponry options fans have been clamoring for. With dynamic options from around the world of Tamriel, players will feel the depth and scope of the game as they find unique weapons from every region. With additional expansions to add unique weapons and magical items, this is a must-have for any players opting for a melee build.
8 Apocalypse – Magic Of Skyrim
Magic has always been powerful in Skyrim, but there just wasn’t a lot of variety. Apocalypse – Magic of Skyrim transforms the powerful system into a dynamic set of possibilities that will leave players in wonder as they try to discover the plethora of new powers at their fingertips. With over one hundred and fifty-five new spells plus scrolls and staves to match, this mod makes magic into the unknown world of possibility that it should be. Destruction and conjuration aren’t the only useful schools of magic anymore, with viable builds in each school for surviving the wilds of Skyrim.
7 Ordinator – Perks Of Skyrim
Skyrim has a deep and rich skill system with a variety of trees and numerous useful perks. The Ordinator – Perks of Skyrim mod transforms this system from well thought out and deep skill trees to a massive behemoth of interwoven and winding skill jungles. Adding around four hundred new and improved perks, it would take any player years to fully uncover the secrets of each skill. Fans will immediately recognize the change as they begin to level up, each skill tree is huge, and the possibilities are endless.
6 Sacrosanct – Vampires Of Skyrim
The Dawnguard DLC added playable vampires to the game, well, it was supposed to. Ultimately, the vampire lord powers are severely underwhelming. The Sacrosanct – Vampires of Skyrim mod certainly changes that for the better.
Adding dozens of new perks, mechanics, and spells to the vampire lord system, this mod will make the Dragonborn into the ultimate bloodsucker. With a new side-quest to gain more vampire powers and dynamic skills such as walking on water and swimming without drowning, this mod will have players feeling like the alpha-predator they always wanted to be.
5 Summermyst – Enchantments Of Skyrim
For new players, the enchanting system of Skyrim can be confusing and seem like a waste of time. But veteran fans know the secret to good gear is high-quality enchantments. Summermyst – Enchantments of Skyrim adds seventy-one enchantments for armor and forty-nine for weaponry totaling one hundred and twenty new powerful enchantments. The mod fully integrates each of these into the game, allowing items with these enchantments to be bought, looted, and disenchanted. Not only does the mod add new enchantments, it also improves vanilla enchantments to make everything feel balanced. Overall, this will turn your enchanting from so-so to good to go.
4 Andromeda – Unique Standing Stones Of Skyrim
The standing stones scattered around Skyrim’s hilly and mountainous map are an interesting tool to make players feel unique in how they build their Dragonborn. Andromeda – Unique Standing Stones of Skyrim overhauls this system to make each standing stone more dynamic. From standing stones that allow players to summon lunar familiars to stones that allow the Dragonborn to cheat death, each choice will drastically change how fans play the game. Each stone has two options for blessings and further adds a third option once each stone has been discovered. This adds an incredibly complex array of powers to the game, creating a plethora of unique builds and playstyles for every fan.
3 Ultimate Combat
The combat system in Skyrim left many fans wanting. It just didn’t live up to the systems in its predecessor, Oblivion. The Ultimate Combat mod seeks to rectify this issue and transform the world of Skyrim into an interesting and dynamic battle arena.
Adding special moves to each weapon type, scaling stamina costs, and other new systems such as poise, the Ultimate Combat mod turns boring old combat into an exciting and heart-racing event. Adding new strategy into battle, such as damage scaling based on movement speed, timed blocks to conserve stamina, and charged spells for stronger casting, will keep players thinking on their feet as they slay the bandits hiding out in any old stronghold.
2 Wintersun – Faiths Of Skyrim
Skyrim’s various faiths function less like an RPG upgrade system and more like a meaningless set of shrines more useful for curing disease than providing a religious boon. The Wintersun – Faiths of Skyrim mod changes all of that, transforming the lackluster faith system into a deep and complex structure where the player’s choice actually matters. The Dragonborn can use a shrine to gain favor with a deity and become their follower. Artifacts of the divine become more powerful and with enough favor can earn players boons to gain more power. This system will make players question whether they should rush past the sanctuary in any given city.
1 Skyrim Underground
Skyrim has a pretty big map as is, but what lies below the dirt of this sprawling region? Skyrim Underground adds a massive dungeon network connecting all of Skyrim. Every major settlement and city has a connection to the underground, even spanning its reach onto the island of Solstheim from the Dragonborn DLC. Adding new enemy types, fully voiced character quests, and new treasures, this mod turns Skyrim on its head. With an overwhelming maze of labyrinthine dungeons, Skyrim Underground transforms the adventurous land of Skyrim into a daring and devastating Metroidvania dungeon crawl.
