Plenty of classic movies have been adapted into board games, and it’s just been announced that one such film, The Princess Bride, is getting one in a few weeks.
The 1987 cult comedy was one of the first films to memorably poke fun at fairy tale tropes with its whimsical story full of true love and swashbuckling heroics, and soon fans will be able to relive it with The Princess Bride Adventure Book Game. This is actually the latest tabletop adaptation of the movie (there’ve been other board games throughout the years, as well as card games and even a RPG), so it’s far from the weirdest adaptation of The Princess Bride out there.
Borrowing the framing device of the movie, in which an old man reads The Princess Bride’s story to his sick grandson, the Adventure Book Game tasks 1-4 players with working together to recreate ts narrative, aided by a real-life book that provides maps of the film’s locations, including the Cliffs of Insanity and the Fire Swamp. All the while, players must discard the board game‘s story cards and move their characters around the map to face the various challenges awaiting them inside the story, as well deal with interruptions from the grandson outside of it.
The game is set to be released in Target stores in the US on October 4, priced at $25 (no word yet on whether publisher Ravensburger is planning to bring it to other retailers and territories). It’ll take around 90 minutes on average to play all the way through, which is plenty of time for someone to spout off at least a few of The Princess Bride’s iconic lines.
