Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Trailer Banned in China

After a week of teases in Call of Duty: Warzone and online, Activision finally announced Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War with the official reveal trailer. However, the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War reveal trailer has since been banned in China, with Activision uploading a new, shorter version that can still be viewed in the country.

As reported by CharlieIntel, the original Black Ops Cold War reveal trailer features a 1 second clip of the Tiananmen Square massacre, an event in China’s history that the government heavily censors. That trailer has since been removed from the official Call of Duty YouTube channel by Activision in all countries, though is still viewable on other YouTube channels outside of China. As expected, the new version of the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War trailer has the Tiananmen Square clip removed, likely as a way to appease China so gamers in the country can still watch the trailer.

Call of Duty has never shied away from controversial topics, which has seen it face censorship in any other instances as well. The most recent example of this is when the Russian PlayStation Store decided not to sell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, due to some of the content found in that game’s single player campaign. Prior to that, Russia also banned Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, likely due to the controversial No Russian mission.

It will be interesting to see if Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is censored any further. A new Black Ops Cold War trailer is going to be released on Wednesday, August 26, which is expected to be the world premiere of the new game’s gameplay. After that, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set to be featured during the Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation, though it’s unclear exactly what aspect of the game will be shown off then.

Looking ahead, it’s possible that the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War campaign will have controversial content that may have to be censored for certain markets. After all, the new game is dealing with the Cold War era, and there are plenty of controversial events that happened during that time. It wouldn’t be the first time that a Call of Duty game has been censored, and it almost certainly won’t be the last.

If anything is censored in the game, it will likely be in the campaign. However, there will likely be a lot more to Black Ops Cold War than just its campaign. Like usual, Black Ops Cold War is expected to bring back the traditional Call of Duty multiplayer experience, and it’s also rumored to have a co-op Zombies mode as well. Whatever the case may be, Call of Duty fans will just need to wait for more information.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is in development for unspecified platforms.
