After confirming the extended cast for The Suicide Squad, the upcoming DC villain team-up reboot, James Gunn tweeted that “#DCFanDome is over, but #TheSuicideSquad lives on… at least until a good amount of them get massacred in August 2021.” So maybe don’t get too attached to any of the characters just yet.
Joining Harley Quinn, Rick Flagg and Captain Boomerang on this mission is a veritable who’s who of DC’s C-list villains. Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker and Peter Capaldi as The Thinker are the bigger names as well as the more “unique” types, like everyone’s favorite space cowboy Nathan Fillion as Arm Fall Off Boy. His power is he can detach his arms, yeah.
Looking at some of the casting, it’s not hard to imagine who potentially won’t see the credits roll. There’s some interesting choices like Pete Davidson, a regular cast member of Saturday Night Live, as Blackguard, Flula Borg, a YouTube personality, as Javeline and David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man. The first Suicide Squad, despite the title, only killed off one character – Slipknot, early on as a warning to the others to co-operate or else. It looks like James Gunn’s take will make up for lost time.
James Gunn has said that The Suicide Squad is more a sequel to the 1987 run of comics and is aiming to capture the tone of John Ostrander’s work on the series. Suicide Squad was a chance for obscure DC villains to have their moment in the spotlight and helped popularize Captain Boomerang and Deadshot before their movie debut in 2016. It also had the first appearance of Oracle, Barbara Gordon’s identity after being shot by the Joker in Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke.
In any case, James Gunn’s looks like it’ll carry his trademark slick humor. And given his talent for spinning previously unknown properties into box office gold (Guardians of the Galaxy anyone?), The Suicide Squad could well be the sleeper hit of 2021.
The Suicide Squad is expected to release in August 2021.
