Although many in-person Dungeons and Dragons campaigns have been put on hold as the world practices social distancing, the self-proclaimed “world’s greatest roleplaying game” continues to grow throughout 2020. D&D livestreams and digital toolsets for the game have become more popular than ever and the 5e books released in 2020 have been very well-received. Wizards of the Coast recently announced the next adventure book Icewind Dale Rime of the Frostmaiden, but that isn’t the only major release arriving in late 2020.
During a recent press event, Game Rant had a chance to get an early look at the next major rules expansion for 5e Dungeons and Dragons. The upcoming book, titled Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, is the largest rules expansion since Xanathar’s Guide to Everything and acts as an optional toolkit full of new options for both players and dungeon masters. The book is similar in length to Xanathar’s Guide to Everything and brings some of the most popular content that was play tested through Unearthed Arcana in recent years into the official DnD lineup.
Players can expect additional subclass options for every playable class and the first printing of the Artificer class in a sourcebook. The Artificer originally appeared in the Eberron: Rising From the Last War campaign setting book, so this will be a great way for players to get a hold of that class without diving into the Eberron setting. The class also got some tweaks to make it a bit more appropriate to The Forgotten Realms or any other non-Eberron setting.
“The special witchcraft of Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything is the freedom it gives you to personalize your D&D character in new ways,” said Jeremy Crawford, the book’s lead designer and the principal rules designer of Dungeons & Dragons. “D&D adventurers are exceptional, and this book gives you the tools to make them and their story even more extraordinary.”
Players can also expect a list of new Feats and lots of new Spell options before the book moves on to GM resources. On the dungeon master side of things, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything is full of useful resources for running a campaign including expanded rules for creating and playing sidekicks, rules for venturing into various supernatural environments, and a whole section full of puzzles and their solutions that DMs can throw at their parties.
The book really sounds jam-packed with interesting content and it is likely going to be on a lot of holiday shopping lists later this year. Keep in mind that Dungeons and Dragons 5e will always be optimized for play with just the core rulebooks (DMG, Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual) and any additional sourcebooks are considered optional tools at the party and DMs disposal. This just means that players and GMs shouldn’t feel required to utilize Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, though it is full of useful information and fun options if they are ready to branch out from the core line of books.
There are going to be a lot of other details about Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything and other upcoming D&D products dropping throughout the rest of the summer and early fall, so be sure to stay tuned and check back for additional news. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Dungeons and Dragons news, updates, and strategy guides. Until then, roll well, adventurers!
Dungeons and Dragons: Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything releases on November 17, 2020. Existing Dungeons and Dragons products are available now at game stores or digitally through DnD Beyond.
