The smartphone has become a ubiquitous feature of modern day life. Perhaps the most prominent brand when it comes to this type of phone is Apple’s iPhone. Although production of iPhones has been affected by the Coronavirus (like everything else), it remains a staple of modern convenience.
The design for Apple‘s iPhone piggy-backed off the previous iPod, a convenient music playing device. Originally lampooned for its continuously releasing new models and decreasing size, the iPod was still a huge hit. Much of Apple’s success in the non-PC market today can be traced back to the iPod, and the iPhone and its offshoots have been convenient successors.
Now, just nine days after the reveal of the updated iPhone SE, new photos have leaked of what seems to be the iPhone 12. The photos show details of the casings and various sizes of the different iPhone 12 models that will be available. Prices are also shown, with different ranges for the four different models. But what has people in a real tizzy are the cameras of the more expensive models. Clustered in the upper corner of the phone’s back, many have been quick to point out how the four camera lenses resemble a stove, and they’re not wrong. Memes have already begun to flow.
While this is not an official reveal, some sources already seem to have information about the phones. This includes how much processing power it will have, as well as what features it will and will not have. This apparently includes a lack of EarPods, or a conventional charger. While nothing is certain yet, it is worth noting that apparently the reveal date is set for early October. If this is true, it means Apple will officially reveal the phone just months after its latest phone release, and within one year of the iPhone 11’s release. This is very close, model-wise, especially if the iPhone 12 is set to release next year. However, considering Apple usually releases new iPhone iterations two years apart, it’s not that unexpected.
Why the information is leaking now is a real question. One must always consider whether or not whenever info is leaked for a release like this, especially with so much information, how much of it was to drum up publicity. There’s always the possibility that it has to do with Epic Games’ recent lawsuit against Apple. Part of Epic’s campaign against Apple removing Fortnite from its phones has been defamation of Apple in the public eye. A shiny new phone could well distract from that.
That said, very little will distract from the prices of the phones. Many on Twitter have expressed sadness or anger at the idea of a new phone dropping just as they changed to the iPhone 11. The prices may not be as high as iPhones with Fortnite currently installed, but they are still prohibitive. How much of what has been leaked is finalized is unknown at this time.
