PS5, Xbox Series X Won’t Dominate Holiday Console Sales, Says Analyst

The next generation of video game consoles is right around the corner. With the Xbox Series X coming in November and the PlayStation 4 being released around the same time, by the end of the year fans will officially be playing next-gen games on the truly powerful consoles. However, even with the huge amount of excitement building up to these new consoles, one analyst believes that they will not dominate this holiday.

According to Japanese company Ace Securities Co., an asset management firm that has analyzed the games industry in the past, the question for the holiday isn’t whether the Xbox Series X or PS5 is better, but just how much more successful the Nintendo Switch will be than both.

Japanese blog Esuteru has transcribed information from the research division of Ace Securities Co. The original text is in Japanese, but an English translation is available. The research comes to the conclusion that the Nintendo Switch will continue its sales success in the holiday period for multiple reasons.

The first reason for anticipating that the Switch will be successful has to do with Nintendo’s year-over-year profits. During the Coronavirus pandemic, Nintendo went from a 10% increase to a 48% increase. Because of COVID-19 and the huge success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nintendo itself reported a 500% net increase since last year.

What is remarkable is that there has been a shortage of Nintendo Switch consoles during the pandemic, but sales continued. The research firm is predicting that production will continue to increase and more Switch consoles will be made available, which will only help in terms of sales. There may be a limited amount of PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles available when they both launch, making the Switch the easier device to find.

Another important thing to note is that the price of the next-gen systems will be significantly higher than the Nintendo Switch. Leaks and inside information on the price of the Xbox Series X and PS5 have indicated that they will be around $499 each. The Switch is $299. The change-up could come from Microsoft, with the Xbox Series S possibly being priced around the same amount as the Nintendo Switch. Overall, however, when it comes to a tough year financially for many thanks to an odd 2020 year, the known, popular, and cheaper Nintendo Switch may fly off shelves.

The hybrid console has dominated recently, as the Switch was again the highest selling console of the month in July. It may be the highest-selling console for the remainder of the year, even with the next-gen finally arriving. The continuation of the success seems entirely possible.
