Rocksteady’s new DC game has finally been unveiled. As long rumored, the game will be Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, where Amanda Waller’s anti-heroes will take on Superman and the Justice League.
Both WB Games Montreal’s Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad will involve four different characters that the player can take for a spin. For Suicide Squad, this includes Harley Quinn, Deadshot, King Shark, and the outback outlaw Captain Boomerang. But who is Captain Boomerang, and what will his role be in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League?
Captain Boomerang has been a member of the Suicide Squad since its second roster. Before then, the character was a minor Flash villain, but it was the Squad that really brought him to the forefront of the DC universe. Real name George “Digger” Harkness, the Captain was raised in Korumburra, Australia as the illegitimate son of an Australian woman and an American soldier. He became skilled at making boomerangs, and took on the name Captain Boomerang after a toy company hired him to make more and to promote the brand as its mascot.
However, when he was ridiculed for his new persona, Captain Boomerang began using his creations as weapons in a life of crime and in his bitterness took on a new mantra: what goes around comes around. Harkness began building boomerangs with all sorts of modifications, including exploding boomerangs, razor-sharp boomerangs, and even a giant boomerang that he tied the Flash to and fired into space, though as with all boomerangs, it came back to bite him. It’s this penchant for silliness that made many fans want Captain Boomerang playable in more games, like Injustice.
In exchange for being pardoned for his crimes, Harkness became one of the members of the Suicide Squad, but as well as being one of the most cowardly and self-centered members of the already villainous crew, Captain Boomerang created friction with other members due to his constant joking. Something of a class clown, the Captain’s cruel sense of humor has taken on a far darker tone, including tricking original Suicide Squad member Slipknot into attempting to flee the Squad just to see if the explosive bracelets the Squad is forced to wear would activate. They did.
Expect Harkness to be the wild card among wild cards in the upcoming Suicide Squad game. Gamers who enjoyed playing Trevor in GTA 5 will likely have an affinity for this Antipodean anti-hero, and like Trevor, he’s likely to get the gang into even more trouble than he solves. This is no better demonstrated than at the end of the teaser when his boomerang gently bounces off of Superman’s head, and he immediately blames King Shark.
The character has always pulled in two distinct directions. In terms of his personality, the Captain is at once the class clown and terrified of being genuinely laughed at. In terms of his different incarnations over the years, one direction wants him to be more like the Riddler or the Joker, a classic themed DC villain with a penchant for flare and a totally ridiculous backstory. The other version puts him more in the same boat with characters like Deadshot, a criminal with an extremely niche but useful skill whose ridiculousness extends mostly to his own quips but who barely conceals a sadistic streak underneath it all.
It seems likely from the images so far that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be going with the latter incarnation. Players can expect the Captain to have a wide array of wacky weaponry from among his inventions, as well as hearing his colorfully crude commentary throughout the game. If past appearances are anything to go by, Captain Boomerang will likely be almost as big a problem for the Squad as Superman himself.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will release in 2020 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
