Despite the long and troubled history of the WWE 2K series, wrestling and video games have always been a great mix. Many WWE wrestlers are well-documented gamers who are eager to show off their love for all kinds of titles. One wrestler continues to show their love of gaming within the ring .
Wrestler Zelina Vega has a long history of showing off her love of video games both in and out of the ring. Her latest showcase came at WWE‘s second biggest Pay-Per-View event of the year, SummerSlam.
Vega decided that the best way to celebrate the summer madness was to dress up as the hacker Sombra from Overwatch. While Vega didn’t have a match at the show, she escorted wrestlers Angel Garza and Andrade to their Tag Team Title bout against the Street Profits. On her way to the ring, Vega opened up the jacket to show the details of the outfit with the purple color scheme. Vega even went so far to mimic Sombra’s hair style, which was on full display during her appearance on the SummerSlam pre-show.
This Sombra outfit is just the next video game themed attire Vega has brought to the WWE. The wrestler has a long history of cosplaying as characters across genre and platforms. Just days ago, Vega posted her incredible Apex Legends cosplay, continuing her trend of knocking cosplay projects out of the park. Before that, Vega had done a Nessa cosplay from Pokemon Sword and Shield, and even entered this year’s Royal Rumble as Sindel from Mortal Kombat.
Wrestlers dressing up as characters for ring work is nothing new but it is still a treat to see. While Vega has made it her signature to bring these outfits to the ring, other wrestlers have shared the idea. WWE wrestler Alexa Bliss pitched gear based on Tifa from Final Fantasy 7 Remake but it sadly never materialized. The wrestler believed to have popularized the idea of dressing up as characters to enter the ring is Rey Mysterio back in WCW. Mysterio has made it a point to dress up as superheroes to enter the ring, an idea wrestlers today fully embrace.
While it is common for gaming culture to come into wrestling, recent news shows that wrestling, or specifically wrestlers, are making their way into some big upcoming video games. WWE wrestler Samoa Joe is voicing Killer Shark in developer Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. The news only came in yesterday after Joe cheekily announced it on Twitter.
Considering how much Vega has shown her love for gaming as a whole, fans are hoping she can follow in Samoa Joe’s footsteps and get the chance to be in a game instead of just being a giant fan.
Overwatch is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
