Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Confirms PS5 and Xbox Series X Exclusive Features

After months of rumors and a week of official teases, Activision has finally lifted the veil off of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The series is once more going back in time to continue the story the original Black Ops started, while at the same time pushing the series into the future with its first entry on the next generation of consoles.

There’s a lot of new information for fans to chew on today, covering everything from Black Ops Cold War’s release date to its gameplay. Naturally, the new Call of Duty will come with plenty of multiplayer modes (which will be fully revealed next month), but it will also mark the return of the series’ Zombies mode, along with a more robust campaign that will feature multiple endings and dialogue options that impact the narrative.

It should also come as no surprise that the game will be utilizing several noticeable features that will only be found on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. According to a marketing snippet on its official website, Black Ops Cold War will support a number of features Sony and Microsoft have been hyping for their consoles, such as “higher framerate, hardware-based ray-tracing, shorter load times and more.”

Currently, players are able to “unlock the power of next-gen Call of Duty experiences” by pre-ordering either Black Ops Cold War’s Cross-Gen Bundle or its Ultimate Edition on either platform. Since it’s been confirmed that the game won’t support free cross-gen upgrades for the current-gen versions, there won’t be a cheaper way for current-gen players to upgrade to next-gen consoles.

With the PS5 and XSX’s launch dates still a somewhat vague “holiday 2020,” it’s understandable that the current release window for the next-gen versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is similarly unclear. What’s weird, though, is that the official website suggests the game might not launch on both consoles at the same time, as it confirms a holiday 2020 launch window for the PS5 version while simply saying the XSX version will come out “later this year.”

It’s possible that that could be reading too much into things, especially considering that the PS4 and Xbox One versions have been confirmed to be launching on the same day. That said, PlayStation owners will still be getting some content early, such as access to Black Ops Cold War’s open beta.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will launch on November 13 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions to follow later this year.
