In an unfortunate announcement during today’s Gamescom: Opening Night Live event, the livestream confirmed the recent rumored delay of the upcoming LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga until 2021.
Though the Star Wars franchise saw great success with the original three episodes, beginning one of the largest pop-culture followings that the world has ever seen, the LEGO Star Wars series garnered a large fanbase of its own, leaving many fans awaiting the next installment of the video game series.
Made by developer Traveller’s Tales, the games explore the same setting and events of the movies, but with added comedic relief, well-fit for fans of all ages. Because of its success, fans have been highly anticipating the release of The Skywalker Saga, which was set to release later this year in October, however, in the last twenty-four hours a rumor of delay swept the internet.
The rumor began when a listing for The Skywalker Saga appeared on the LEGO Star Wars’ website prematurely showed that the game wouldn’t be coming until 2021. However, this seemed to be unintentional as the message was quickly taken down, and replaced with “The Skywalker Saga – Coming Soon.” LEGO did not comment on the change in release date, so it seems like the announcement may have been meant to release today at the Gamescom: Opening Night Live event, which confirmed the delay until next year, though, there is a bit of good news to come along with it.
Not only are some gamers optimistic that this will give room for Traveller’s Tales to fine-tune the game even further, but the trailer also confirmed that The Skywalker Saga will be coming to next-generation consoles, as well as current-gen consoles. Fans are taking to Twitter to voice their divisive opinion on the decisions; some feel that this was a good call, ultimately meaning a better game in the end, while others wish that the same release date was kept and not worry about next-gen console additions. However, many fans are speculating that the delay is most likely due to Covid-19 restrictions, and The Skywalker Saga certainly wouldn’t be the first game to be delayed for the same reason.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will follow the entire tale seen in the nine main series movies, including the most recent two episodes following Rey and Kylo Ren. Rather than a simple remake, the newest installment will not only improve graphics and revamp some combat, but players will also have the option of starting the story from any episode they wish. And in true LEGO Star Wars fashion, it will feature some added LEGO-themed comedic relief in addition to the epic battles and fight scenes.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is set to release Spring 2021 for PC, PS4, Ps5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
