Godfall Details Valorplate Customization, Gets Extended Gameplay Demo

Following a highly anticipated glimpse at Godfall on the first day of Gamescom, developer Counterplay Games went into further depth about what players could expect from the next generation title in a follow-up interview. After showing off a new Valorplate in the latest Godfall preview, the studio’s director talked about how Counterplay tailored Valorplates to accommodate players with different approaches to the game’s challenges.

Speaking to IGN before showing off more gameplay, director Keith Lee explained Godfall‘s Valorplates for those unfamiliar with the game’s medieval armors. In short, Lee described the game’s armors as “weapon platforms” or character classes. As players continue to progress through the game, they will be able to customize their characters with additional, craftable Valorplates that have different abilities.

As the interview cut to combat and gameplay, Lee elaborated by talking about how the new Valorplates will offer different boosts to players. The Counterplay director described the way players arrange the Valorplates’ different benefits as “augment constellations” which can impact a character’s development. Specific capabilities that can appear from placing different Valorplates in different slots include a character’s “always-on traits,” and a player’s elemental damage power. This way, even if Godfall players have a similar arsenal at their disposal, the way the Valorplates come together might drastically change how these powers are used.

When asked for more information about crafting new Valorplates, Lee explained that players will have to collect Valorplate cores and other resources from custom game modes, combat, specific missions, and treasure chests to forge more of the 12 different Valorplates that are available. He also talked about Counterplay’s inspiration for Godfall‘s Valorplates, ranging from epic fantasies like The Stormlight Archive and science fiction stories like Iron Man and the Marvel Universe as a whole, and adding the “medieval European” flair to carve out their own world.

According to Lee’s interview, Godfall will have three Valorplate classes for players to use. Describing the balanced Valorplates as similar to “hybrids,” Lee noted that different types of armor, like the exotic and specialized Valorplates, could grant players more cooldown abilities or focus on debuffs, or even grant higher DPS. Meanwhile, the gameplay footage showed off Vertigo, the latest Valorplate. Finally, Lee described “Archon modes,” which are similar to charged finishers. According to the interview, players can trigger these attacks by pressing the L3 and R3 triggers. Every Archon mode offers a passive, always-active ability, a set of buffs, an instant ability, and the chance to maximize the Valorplate’s Archon stats even further.

Ultimately, it appears that Godfall has a nuanced gameplay system that will easily immerse its fans. Players might enjoy the game’s co-op multiplayer, or the fact that Godfall will not have microtransactions, which allows three players to try similar or vastly different Valorplate setups.

Godfall is in development for PC and PS5.
