The futuristic post-apocalyptic Metroidvania game Haak has likely flown under many gamers’ radar. Haak was announced in May 2019, but news has been relatively slow from developer Blingame. That’s now clearly due to Blingame being hard at work getting Haak ready for Early Access, which is now confirmed to be launching on September 16. Haak will be exclusively available on Steam, to start.
Little is known about Haak‘s story, setting, and even its protagonist, as all that Blingame is willing to say so far is that Haak means black in Cantonese, which is “the key colour of our protagonist, as well as the game aesthetic. Otherwise, Haak takes place in a desolate wasteland where there’s a mysterious organization that poses a massive threat. Players will “solve mysteries” and “embrace the world’s ultimate secret,” which seems to imply that they’ll have to figure out what’s going on on their own.
Blingame says its taken direct inspiration from Super Metroid as well as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Haak. As such, it’s understandable that Haak features a mix of exploration, with all manner of side quests, as well as a heavy focus on action combat, offering a variety of unique weapons and skills for players to use in battle.
As for Haak‘s Early Access status, Blingame plans to keep Haak in development for another 12 months beyond September. The Early Access version of the game will feature “three main chapters,” with the full game concluding the game’s story as well as introducing a ton of side content, hidden levels, and progression systems. Additionally, Haak is Blingame’s first release, so it wants to make sure and take in as much feedback as possible so as to polish the game up to player expectations.
Haak releases September 16 on PC in Early Access.
