For some odd reason, the way the Marvel’s Avengers Hero Challenge Card system works isn’t exactly what some people were expecting. Crystal Dynamics — Marvel’s Avengers‘ developer — provided an in-depth look at how the Challenge Card system functions in a recent blog post, and the studio’s explanation has some players upset.
Hero Challenge Cards are Marvel’s Avengers‘ version of the Battle Pass system found in games such as Call of Duty: Warzone and Destiny 2. Every playable hero in Marvel’s Avengers will have their own Challenge Card, and every card features a variety of rewards that players will unlock as they level up their characters.
Because every hero will essentially have their own battle pass, some fans claim that Crystal Dynamics is forcing them to either spend money or endless hours grinding just to get rewards. They don’t want to do the former, and they claim they can’t do the latter because they have lives. Overall though, their complaints show that there’s been some obvious miscommunication.
Regarding the complaint of spending money, the first six Marvel’s Avengers heroes will already have their premium tiers unlocked at launch. This means players will be able to earn both the free and premium rewards available for Khamala Khan, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and the Hulk without having to pay anything.
The only heroes that fans would have to “pay for” would be post-launch Marvel’s Avengers characters such as Hawkeye and Spider-Man. Every post-launch hero’s premium Challenge Card will cost 1000 credits to activate, which translates to 10 US dollars. However, according to Crystal’s post, fans don’t actually have to pay to unlock the premium rewards.
Completing a Hero Challenge Card earns players 1000 credits and over 12500 credits in content. The game has six characters at the start, meaning players will have more than enough credits available to purchase any post-launch heroes’ premium rewards without having to pay real money. The post-launch heroes also reward credits when players complete their cards, so it’s almost like a never-ending cycle.
As far as the time complaint is concerned, Hero Challenge Cards never rotate or expire. This means that even if six months have passed since Marvel’s Avengers’ launch, players will still be able to complete the Challenge Card of any hero they haven’t yet. They’ll be allowed to play at their own pace, no matter how slow that may be. They’ll only have to pay if they want to speed up the process.
Marvel’s Avengers launches September 4, for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
