Pokemon GO: Best Counters for Mega Venusaur | Game Rant

Now that Mega Pokemon are officially a part of Pokemon GO, players have been tasked with collecting a new “Mega Energy” from Mega Raid Battles. Players hoping to Mega Evolve their beloved Venusaurs will have to prepare to defeat Mega Venusaur in combat.

Pokemon GO players who’ve been keeping up with the latest events should be all stocked up on Dragon-types and other rarities featured throughout the last month or so, so hopefully, challenging Mega Venusaur won’t be an extraordinarily difficult task. That said, players will most likely need to enter the Raid with at least three decently leveled Trainers to successfully defeat the mega-powered Kanto starter.

Mega Venusaur, one of the few available Mega Pokemon, is a Grass/Poison type Pokemon, which means that it suffers from weaknesses to Fire, Ice, Psychic, and Flying-type attacks. Every move currently at its disposal is Grass-type, except for one of its three Charged Moves, which can be Sludge Bomb (Poison-type). Bearing this in mind, Fire-type Pokemon will probably be the most effective counters.

Some of the more impressive counters to Mega Venusaur are as follows:

  • Mewtwo (Psychic-type attacks)
  • Mega Charizard X/Y (Fire-type attacks)
  • Moltres (Fire Spin/Sky Attack)
  • Heatran (Fire Spin/Flamethrower)
  • Darmanitan (Fire Fang/Overheat)
  • Latios (Zen Headbutt/Psychic)

Although Venusaur is certainly weak to Fire-types, Trainers shouldn’t forget their powerful Psychic-type Pokemon – a hard-hitter like Mewtwo (with Psychic-type attacks) would be preferable to a weaker Flareon, despite its Fire typing. Or, players going for flair can opt to go into battle with the adorable new Mythical Pokemon Victini, which also has access to Fire and Psychic-type moves. But again, the most important thing is that a Pokemon’s attacks are actually Super Effective. A Latios with Solar Beam instead of Psychic, for example, becomes a relatively awful counter.

Players who’ve already been able to get their hands on a Mega Charizard are in luck, as it’s one of the top counters to Mega Venusaur. Unfortunately though, only one Pokemon can Mega Evolve at a time, so players won’t be able to stack their teams with the fiery starter. At least players who manage to obtain Mega Venusaur can use it towards their attempts to defeat the defense-heavy Mega Blastoise, which is weak to Grass-types.

Players who manage to take out Mega Venusaur and save up their Mega Energy may want to look for some friends who’ve done the same with Mega Blastoise or Charizard, too. With Mega Evolution costs running up to 200 Mega Energy, players would be wise to take advantage of a recently discovered Mega Evolution trading loophole to cheaply fill their Mega Pokedexes. For now, at least the pool of Mega Raid Pokemon remains small; once more Mega Pokemon are released, it may be even more difficult to track down the right kinds of Mega Energy.

Pokemon GO is available now on the App Store and Google Play.
