Chivalry 2 Delayed to Next Year | Game Rant

Tripwire Interactive is known these days for its games that are particularly gory, featuring blood and dismemberment. The Killing Floor and, more recently, the decently reviewed Maneater are some of its claims to fame. One of its titles that has found a niche audience is Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.

Chivalry is less about strategically squaring off against knights, and more about how many decapitations one can rack up before being brained with a lute. The game is good fun, and that’s more of what Chivalry 2 is poised to deliver. Announced last year, it is already clear that Chivalry 2 will follow in the first game’s bloody footsteps.

When Chivalry 2 was announced, it was made clear that it would be part of the PS5 launch lineup. The original Chivalry still looks pretty good for what it is, and Chivalry 2‘s trailers have shown that the updated graphics engine will make the game gorgeously gory. Unfortunately, it looks like the game will no longer be part of the PS5’s initial launch this year. It has been officially announced that Chivalry 2 is being delayed until next year, and the actual month of release is unknown.

This is unfortunate, especially since Chivalry 2 would have been a great point of entry. Chivalry 2 is confirmed to have crossplay across platforms, and players who got to try the alpha have reported good things. While a beta was planned for the game this summer, that has also been pushed back. As many games launching with the next console generation are standalone, Chivalry 2 as a sequel would have provided something reliable and familiar for anyone looking to step into the next generation.

Of course, the first Chivalry is not for everyone, and the devs know this full well. The Chivalry devs have acknowledged that the game is fun while drunk, and that many players are not in it for the high skill ceiling. There are no illusions that Chivalry 2 would try to step out of these bounds, and indeed Tripwire has little need to try and make it a smash hit.

But a reliable mindless fun Medieval combat simulator might be just what the doctor ordered for a new console generation. Each new console is a risky purchase, and if there is nothing to keep and hook the player, they can feel resentful and annoyed. A good multiplayer game can go a long way to assuaging that anger, just like Warhawk did for the early days of the PS3. And if the recent pirate themed update for Killing Floor 2 shows anything, it’s that Tripwire knows how to make a game that is good, reckless fun. Here’s hoping Chivalry 2 is still fun when it comes out, no matter when that may be.

Chivalry 2 will release in 2021 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
