Elden Ring Fans Aren’t Handling the Gamescom No Show Very Well

It has been over a year since any news regarding Elden Ring dropped, and event after event guarantees some hopefuls clamor for news just to feel rejected after the event. It wasn’t at Gamescom Opening Night Live, nor was it expected to be, and many instantly turned to memes to console themselves. Others clinged to some hope that more news about it would surface as Gamescom weekend continued, but as it comes to an end, that’s clearly not the case either.

Hopping into the subreddit can, at times, be like a mad house. Elden Ring has become a meme for the lack of news, and arguably, not many games have the pedigree to go a year without updates and still have a complete subreddit devoted to it. The subreddit is home to these memes, ranging from the fans expected to be hollowed to general disappointment. However, it should be noted that, aside from a random, unverified Reddit user, no one actually expected Elden Ring at Gamescom.

The sheer number of posts tagged as humor is very sad, as many are not laughing at the jokes so much as laughing at themselves or lamenting over Elden Ring. However, the subreddit isn’t going anywhere any time soon, and a quick glance at the Elden Ring news cycle shows how the subreddit’s current mood isn’t likely to change any time soon. Instead of bickering over Elden Ring and Bloodborne 2, discussing the latest topics, or diving into build prep for the game’s release, fans can probably expect months more of sad, hollow memes.

If nothing else, this reaction is a good thing for Elden Ring. As a From Software Soulslike title with some influence from George R.R. Martin, hype for it is relatively high, even if the E3 2019 trailer is the last appearance from the game. So much is actually focused on it now that perhaps even Bloodborne 2 has taken a backseat in popularity, as many want some inkling of Elden Ring to finally surface somewhere.

Opportunities for that in 2020, though, are dwindling. With Gamescom effectively over, the next biggest event it could appear at is The Game Awards 2020, but that’s in December. There’s no ruling out a random out-of-the-blue Tuesday August 32nd announcement, as anything could happen, but as far as venues go, there’s little to go on. And even then, Elden Ring thus far has the same chances to appear later this year as it did with Gamescom. Fans of the Elden Ring subreddit should expect feeds filled with memes for quite some time.

Elden Ring is in development.
