Though Microsoft Flight Simulator has received heaps of critical acclaim for its stunning graphics and immense realism, the community has noticed a surprising number of bizarre bugs regarding the game’s portrayal of Earth. While it would be unreasonable to expect a perfect rendition of the entire world due to various technical, legal, and national security issues, these problems with the game either surround the portrayal of major global landmarks or have resulted in unusual structures appearing during a flight. These problems should have never occurred in the first place and are being fixed by the community in a concerted effort.
A small but vocal portion of the Microsoft Flight Simulator community have taken matters into their own hands and are working hard at fixing various locations around the world. The FS2020Creation subreddit may only have just over 2,500 members as of this time of writing, but it currently has many posts detailing projects aiming to fix landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Melbourne Cricket Ground and even the skylines of various cities all over the world.
Considering that Microsoft Flight Simulator is designed to cater towards the enthusiast community surrounding the simulator genre and amateur flying, this development is not surprising at all. The hard work of the game’s devoted community should be commended, especially with how these sort of projects are perfect to form portfolios for those content creators interested in a career in the video game industry.
This phenomenon comes as yet another blow to the search engine Bing, owned by Microsoft, whose data was used to form the game’s map of Earth. Many jokes at Bing’s expense have been made throughout the internet for years, with many people preferring to use Google instead for a variety of reasons. Though the peculiar incidents that have happened with Microsoft Flight Simulator only affect a small part of the online community, it will further compound people’s perceptions of Bing as being inferior to Google.
While it is good to see the community band together to improve the game that they all enjoy, there is still a certain sense of novel entertainment that can be found at looking at an extremely tall skyscraper in Melbourne, Australia evoking the Citadel from Half-Life 2 or Buckingham Palace being depicted as a generic office block. For that matter, players can choose to not download these fixes and instead wait for whatever updates that Asobo Studio are able to roll out to fix the game’s map.
Microsoft Flight Simulator is available now on PC.
