While it may not hold the same level of popularity it once did, Overwatch is still beloved by many. A huge part of that has to do with the iconic, lovable characters of Overwatch‘s roster. At least one person loves Genji so much, they replaced Geralt in The Witcher 3 with him.
The design and implementation of Overwatch‘s characters has been one of the biggest draws overall. This has led players to want to see the Overwatch cast in environments other than the brief skirmishes of the main game, and some have taken steps to make that happen.
On the dev side of things, one of the game’s creators has stated he would like to turn Overwatch into a series of shows and films. On the player side of things, people are constantly coming up with new things for characters. Sometimes these are just cosmetic, like Mei’s protest outfits. Other times, players are dreaming up a whole new ultimate for Brigitte. But one player has gone above and beyond in the game’s Workshop mode by creating a setup that transforms everything. The Workshop creation turns Overwatch into a 2-D fighting game.
The mode, titled Overwatch Fight Club, sees two characters pitted against each other across a 2-D battleground. At the moment, it seems the only available fighter is Doomfist, with the mirror fighter just being Doomfist in another costume. Several other characters can be called in as assists, each one another villain of the game.
The trailer shows Reaper being called in many times, along with Moira using her ultimate, and Widowmaker with a cross-arena shot securing victory. Doomfist himself makes a great fighting game character, flying across the arena and combo-ing the other Doomfist in style. Considering the Overwatch devs would want Doomfist in Smash, his being a fighting game character is not farfetched.
Hopefully, Overwatch Fight Club will add more fighters in the future, but there is a question of how that would work. After all, most characters in Overwatch use longer-range weapons than Doomfist. Still, the possibility definitely exists for more roster members being adapted to fight close quarters. If Zelina Vega can cosplay as Sombra for SummerSlam, surely Sombra can learn to use some wrestling moves in-game.
How much of Fight Club will work in Overwatch 2 is not clear at the moment, and it would likely have to be recreated in the new game’s workshop. Still, there is plenty of room to innovate in Overwatch before it gets left in the dust. Changes are still being made to characters like Moira, so perhaps these could be incorporated to grow the roster. In any case, the current version of Overwatch Fight Club is available to anyone who wants to try it out. Players just have to go to the Workshop in Overwatch and enter the code BWJ7Z.
Overwatch is available on PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One.
