Here are the 12 biggest new video game releases of September 2020.

Battle royale games are a dime a dozen nowadays, and so each new entry in the genre has to make a concerted effort to stand out from the pack. Spellbreak is unlike any other battle royale game released so far, with its focus on class-based gameplay and the use of magic in the place of firearms. It looks like an action-RPG spin on the battle royale genre, and that alone may be enough to make sure that it finds an audience.

Spellbreak will be free-to-play on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One on September 3.

Crystal Dynamics has been working hard on Marvel’s Avengers for years, and soon the studio’s hard work will finally pay off. Hot off the heels of multiple beta tests, Marvel’s Avengers‘ servers will be going live on September 1 for those that purchase one of the game’s special editions, but its official release date is September 4. The game features a single-player story campaign that sees various members of the titular Avengers team reuniting to fight against the threat of AIM, while also boasting a live-service style co-op mode with various missions that players can complete with friends. With Marvel’s Avengers being a live-service game, fans can expect Crystal Dynamics to support it for the long-term, with new playable characters and more content to be added for free in the months ahead. The game will also be getting ported to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X with some enhancements, and there will even be a free upgrade available.

Marvel’s Avengers launches on September 4 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.

NBA 2K21 is the latest entry in the long-running NBA 2K series, and it will be interesting to see if the new game is able to address some of the concerns fans had after last year’s entry. Some are worried that NBA 2K21 might not bring enough new content to the table or address fans’ concerns about microtransactions, but we’ll find out sooner rather than later. In the meantime, there is also a next-gen version of NBA 2K21 in the works as well, but those that plan to purchase it should expect to pay $70 instead of the standard $60.

NBA 2K21 launches September 4 for Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.

The Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games were once some of the most critically-acclaimed sports games on the market, but it has been dormant for years. After finding success with its Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon remasters, Activision has set its sights on remastering Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater next, releasing enhanced versions of the first two games in the series on modern platforms beginning September 4. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 should be a familiar experience to longtime fans of the franchise, but with vastly improved visuals, online multiplayer, and other new features to make it truly worthwhile. Here’s hoping it does justice to the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater legacy, and convinces Activision to move forward with remakes of other games in the series.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 launches September 4 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

The original Kingdoms of Amalur was well-received at the time of its release and has developed a cult following of dedicated fans. Unfortunately, legal issues surrounding the game’s development doomed its planned franchise and made it highly unlikely that fans would ever see it remastered for modern platforms. But against all odds, THQ Nordic is bringing back Kingdoms of Amalur as Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, with plans to release some brand new content for the game after launch.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning launches September 4 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

One of the most critically-acclaimed indie games of all time is the original Spelunky, and so it’s no surprise that there’s quite a bit of hype for Spelunky 2Spelunky 2 looks to be retaining everything that made the original Spelunky popular, while also adding a slew of new features to keep fans on their toes. Whether or not Spelunky 2 can live up to the legacy of its predecessor remains to be seen, but fans will find out in a couple of weeks.

Spelunky 2 comes to PS4 on September 15.

The original Crysis was known for its cutting-edge graphics and action-packed first-person shooter gameplay. Crysis Remastered will take what was once one of the world’s most visually-impressive games and improve the graphics even further so that it can stand toe to toe with the graphical juggernauts on modern gaming consoles. Already available for the Switch, this version of Crysis Remastered was delayed so Crytek could add some extra polish and address fan feedback, so here’s hoping that extra development time has paid off.

Crysis Remastered is out now on Switch and is coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One on September 18.

The abysmal critical reception for WWE 2K20 saw 2K Sports outright cancel WWE 2K21 to give Visual Concepts more time to develop WWE 2K22. But while a proper pro wrestling simulation game won’t be available this year, 2K Sports is still releasing a new WWE 2K game in the form of WWE 2K Battlegrounds. An arcadey fighting game, WWE 2K Battlegrounds features supernatural elements, ridiculous arenas, and a vast roster of playable characters made up of modern wrestlers and past stars. Fan reception to WWE 2K Battlegrounds has been mixed so far, but we’ll find out soon enough if it’s actually fun to play or not.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds will be available on PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One on September 18.

Vanillaware is known for its unique art styles and making risky, experimental games. The same can be said for its new game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, which has been out in Japan since 2019. A real-time strategy game of sorts, 13 Sentinels blends a variety of genres while telling its story of 13 different playable characters. While it remains to be seen if the game will appeal to western audiences, it has proven to be quite popular with Japanese critics, earning a number of awards in the country. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai has also praised Aegis Rim, calling it a game that everyone should play. Needless to say, that’s quite the endorsement, and it will be interesting to see if it lives up to the hype.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim will launch in the west on September 22 for PS4.

Serious Sam 4 is the long-awaited return of the classic first-person shooter franchise. Originally set to launch in August 2020, Serious Sam 4 has been pushed back to its new September 24 date. Those that want to play it on day one will need to do so either on PC or through Google Stadia, as the game won’t be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or any other platforms until some point in 2021 at the earliest.

Serious Sam 4 will be available on September 24 for PC and Stadia, with PS4 and Xbox One versions coming in 2021.

Earlier this summer, Hangar 13 released Mafia: Trilogy, which included enhanced versions of Mafia 2 and 3, with the promise that the original game would make its debut later. After a short delay, Mafia: Definitive Edition is finally set to launch in late September, bringing with it revamped gameplay and modern visuals. For many modern gamers, this may be their first chance to play the original Mafia, and so there’s quite a bit of excitement for the project.

Mafia: Definitive Edition will launch on September 25 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the most critically-acclaimed video games ever made, and so it’s not exactly a surprise that video game developers are looking to emulate its success. One such game that is clearly inspired by Breath of the Wild is the upcoming Genshin Impact, which features a large open world for players to explore using a variety of different playable characters. Its similarities to Breath of the Wild can only help it, but it will be interesting to see how the game is ultimately able to make a name for itself and carve out its own identity.

Genshin Impact will launch September 28 for PC, PS4, and mobile devices, with a Switch version also in the works.
