Beyond Good And Evil 2 & 9 Other Games We’re Still Waiting To Hear More From

Developing a video game, especially a triple-A title, may take months to years. With high-end console specifications, massive demands, and high expectations in the market, making a game is never easy. Even a simple platformer game can take plenty of time to be perfected.

Unfortunately, these titles, anticipated as they are, have yet to see release. In fact, many have seemingly been stuck in development here for years—or even decades—at this point. From the highly anticipated Dead Island 2 to the most hyped sequel to a classic cult, Beyond Good and Evil 2, here are ten games we’re still waiting to hear more from.

10 Beyond Good And Evil 2

Beyond Good and Evil 2 rumors and leaked trailer surfaced online way back to 2007 and 2009 respectively. However, it wasn’t until 2017 when Ubisoft, the game’s leading publisher, showcased the game’s first official trailer.

Unfortunately, that’s all. There is no more news or even a beta tester for the game, even though Ubisoft did promise us a beta in 2019. It seems like they’re reworking the game for next-gen consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X—hopefully, it will all be worth the hype.

9 Dead Island 2

With such a catchy and upbeat reveal trailer, Dead Island 2 was in everybody’s mouth back in 2014. Unfortunately, the game has been moved continuously from Yager Development to Sumo Digital until Dambuster Studio, the developers behind the unfortunate Homefront: The Revolution—officially took over the production in 2019.

At the moment, the game has yet to see a gameplay trailer or a release date. However, a playable, under-developed version of the game under Yager was leaked last June. Maybe next Halloween would be an excellent time to release, Dambuster?

8 Half-Life: Episode Three

Half-Life 2: Episode Three is another piece of art that will likely never see an official release. Episode Three was expected to pick up the cliffhanger that comes as Episode Two pulls down its curtain, but, instead, all we have now is the new Half-Life: Alyx VR game.

Though we could still theoretically see a proper third installment at some point, it’s safe to say that whatever Valve had planned to release to end the trilogy has been scrapped long ago. To make the matter worse, Marc Laidlaw, the game’s leading writer, called an end to his career at Valve in 2016.

7 Back4Blood

The good old days of Left 4 Dead are finally here because Turtle Rock Studio, previously known as Valvet South, announced L4D’s upcoming spiritual successor, Back4Blood, in 2019. As of this writing, an official trailer for Back4Blood and its release date are nowhere to be found, but Turtle Rock has taken to Twitter to share its first concept art.

However, speaking of Left 4 Dead, Valve has just released a statement on their blog about an upcoming community-made update for L4D2 titled The Last Standing and its teaser.

6 Overkill’s The Walking Dead (Console Ports)

Initially released in 2018, Overkill’s The Walking Dead was postponed several times from 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. Even though the game was already released for Windows in 2018, the PS4 and Xbox One versions were about to be released in 2019.

Unfortunately, following Overkill’s The Walking Dead‘s doomed and lackluster reception, Skybound Entertainment and Starbreeze Publishing terminated their mutual collaboration contract and eventually pulled the game from Steam.

5 Metroid Prime 4

Since the game’s first announcement back in 2017, Metroid Prime 4 has seen plenty of shifts in management and scrapped ideas. Initially, Retro Studios, as the franchise’s leading developer, had no production involvement until a shocking statement came in early 2019 when Nintendo decided to redo the whole project.

After that, Nintendo decided to restart the game from ground zero under Retro, and that’s all. No official reveal trailer, no release date, no little sneak-peek of the game’s plotlines, nothing.

4 Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 is another excellent triple-A game delayed due to COVID-19. Initially set as a spring 2020 release, Techland decided to give the team more time to develop and gave no further detail about the release date.

Unfortunately, following the sexual misconduct accusations against the game’s lead writer, Chris Avellone, in June 2020, both parties have agreed to part ways, leaving Dying Light 2‘s future in limbo.

3 Elden Ring

Since starting development in early 2017 and its reveal trailer in 2019, FromSoftware’s Elden Ring is yet to see an official release date. We’re already three months beyond June 2020, the game’s rumored release date, but there still hasn’t been any word on it.

However, some dedicated fans created their own mods while waiting for it. Let’s just hope Elden Ring will live up to the billing.

2 Atomic Heart

Developed by a Russian team known as Mundfish, Atomic Heart caught a lot of people’s attention for its that-weird-dream-you-can’t-remember gameplay trailer back in 2018.

Mundfish announced that they were to release a beta version of this game somewhere at the end of 2019, but we’re more than eight months of 2020 already, and it’s still nowhere to be found. As of this writing, Mundfish has no further details on the game’s release date, though we did recently get a ten-minute gameplay trailer which confirmed that the project was still in active development. Hopefully, Atomic Hearts won’t end up as another vaporware project.

1 Biomutant

Lastly is Biomutant, an open-world post-apocalyptic RPG with branching storylines where your choices do matter. 2015 was the start of the game’s development progress, and, five years later, THQ Nordic is yet to announce the game’s release date.

It was initially released in 2018 and later delayed until 2019, but, at the moment, Biomutant is still nowhere to be found in the market. However, in February 2020, the devs took to Twitter to reveal that the game is “in the final stages of polishing.”
