Ubisoft recently confirmed that PS5 backwards compatibility will only work for PS4 games, noting that PS1, PS2, and PS3 games will not be playable on Sony’s next-gen console.
The news comes from the Ubisoft support page, as spotted by Nibel on Twitter. Check out the tweet below.

Following the link embedded in the tweet will bring you to a post on the official Ubisoft support page with information about how PS5 backwards compatibility is due to work.
“As part of their next-gen upgrade process, PlayStation offer a number of features designed to help you move from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5,” the post reads. “PlayStation 4 players will be able to join multiplayer games with PlayStation 5 players.”
“Backwards compatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games,” it continues.
It’s worth noting that this comes from Ubisoft and not Sony, and could therefore refer to one specific studio’s response to PS5 backwards compatibility as opposed to the overall possibility of loading pre-PS4 games onto a next-gen machine.
That being said, the phrasing of “will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games” implies that it genuinely can’t be done, so this could potentially be concrete confirmation that PS5 backwards compatibility won’t be a thing for games that launched prior to PS4.
In related news, PlayStation France recently added four new private trailers to the official PS5 playlist on YouTube, so although things are looking a bit dire for older games, we’ll likely get more news on upcoming ones pretty soon. Meanwhile, we recently learned that the PS5 DualSense controller is capable of generating vibrations based on in-game sound effects.
The PS5 is scheduled to launch in mid-November, approximately one week after Microsoft releases the Xbox Series X. Apparently, Sony is already sending out invites for pre-orders.
The post PS5 backwards compatibility only works for PS4 games, says Ubisoft appeared first on VG247.
