Tesla Hiring Developers for an In-Car Gaming Platform | Game Rant

Though Tesla’s range of electric vehicles is known for being environmentally friendly yet efficient, they are also surprisingly capable gaming consoles via the Tesla Arcade, albeit with a small library of games. It seems that the Palo Alto, California-based company is looking to expand this particular functionality based on recent job listings for their American locations.

On its website, Tesla has job listings for “Video Games Engineer, Infotainment Software” at various locations, namely in Bellevue, Washington; the new Giga Texas factory in Austin, Texas, which is currently under construction; and their headquarters in Palo Alto, California. With Tesla locating most of its video games team in Bellevue, Washington as seen with a “Software – Video Games Engineering Internship” listing, the hiring of new engineers for the Giga Texas factory is a signal of the electric vehicle and clean energy company’s intent to expand its vehicles’ gaming power alongside other innovations.

The very idea of a car having gaming capabilities is odd, to say the least, but it appears that Tesla does acknowledge how many people can hold great skepticism towards this concept. In the listing, Tesla states that gaming in a car is “uncharted territory” and that it wants to “set the bar for what video games in a car can be.” Though it obviously makes more sense for a prospective owner of a Tesla vehicle to be interested in the actual driving experience and features such as space, there may be an untapped market for those interested in in-car gaming.

While it seems unlikely that more demanding games will be added to the library of relatively less taxing games such as Cuphead and Stardew Valley, Tesla is a company founded upon the objective of innovation as seen with the constant hardware and software updates made to its vehicles. Do not be surprised if Tesla cars become capable gaming consoles in the near future, especially with CEO Elon Musk constantly tweeting about adding games like MinecraftGrand Theft Auto V, and even The Witcher to Tesla vehicles.

Considering that people are using Tesla cars as controllers for games like Mario Kart, there is most assuredly a market for people interested in using the cars to game. With Tesla allowing anyone to use its technology patents in good faith, any advancements made in-car gaming could have drastic implications on the entire automobile industry. Many of Tesla’s gasoline-based competitors have released their own electric cars with a luxury edge ever since Tesla first released the Roadster in 2008. If Tesla can deliver a good gaming experience in their cars, it will not be long before their competitors follow suit.
