The first half of 2020 was dominated by news about Animal Crossing: New Horizons‘ fantastic sales numbers. Many folks were looking for some light entertainment to distract them from the very real horrors of the coronavirus. Heading into the second half of the year, it looks like a new leader has emerged in sales: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
Playerbase figures for Call of Duty: Warzone have been regularly updated, and while the staggering numbers for the battle royale offshoot act as a strong indicator of the strength of the Call of Duty brand, Modern Warfare‘s sales numbers haven’t been reported until now. The two Call of Duty titles have been continually adding new content to their games to keep players invested, and hype surrounding the game remains strong.
In a somewhat unorthodox manner, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s sales were revealed in an Nvidia livestream, where the computer hardware company was promoting its new series of graphics cards. While discussing how its graphics cards would be powerful enough to handle ray tracing in the new Call of Duty: Cold War, the company included a shout out to the “last entry in the series” surpassing 30 millions units. The “last entry” would be Modern Warfare, making the sales news a touch unexpected, as it did not come officially from Activision or Infinity Ward.
With the number not confirmed by either of the companies responsible for Modern Warfare, it is hard to get a definitive answer on the 30 million number, but it certainly seems well within the ballpark, considering how Call of Duty has dominated the gaming scene for most of the year. After a highly successful Call of Duty League season, the game continues to barrel ahead, showing off roadmaps for new content and teasing future games.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and its battle royale counterpart Warzone, have not been without issue, as the game has had to deal with a range of bugs brought on by content updates. Right now, the Superstore in Verdansk is loaded with cash in some games, allowing players to hoard more money than Scrooge McDuck and buy loadouts and UAVs with ease.
The game has also been plagued by cheaters, but Activision has finally taken steps to combat cheaters by threatening to sue a Call of Duty cheat maker unless it ceases its “services.”
Even with the issues, the game remains hugely popular. While not necessarily official information, news that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has topped 30 million units sold seems about right.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
