Dark Souls: 10 Mind-Blowing Fan Theories You Had No Idea About

Dark Souls is easily one of the most popular and important gaming releases of its time, and it’s easy to see why this is the case. During a time when pretty much every AAA studio was resigned to making a banal and brain-dead gaming experience for its players, Dark Souls burst onto the scene with a level of respect for its player base that had long been considered to be a relic of the past. The games were challenging and had a ton of mystery attached to it, forcing players to go out of their way and extensively analyze the lore of this franchise to understand the significance of what they were even doing in the first place.

The mysterious nature of Dark Souls has prompted a ton of players to dissect each and every aspect of the games to figure out the lore, story, and everything along the same lines in these games. This has led to various fan theories popping up all over the internet, with some of them — ten, to be exact — being so bizarre that they definitely warrant a mention. Keeping this in mind, here are ten of the most mind-blowing theories present in Dark Souls.

10 Drangleic Exists In The Abyss

At the start of Dark Souls 2, we see the player character plunging into a whirlpool of sorts, which whisks him to the world of Drangleic.

This convoluted manner of reaching the area, coupled with a number of hints that are present all over the world, strongly hint towards the fact that Drangleic is actually a creation in the Abyss.

9 The Abyss Watchers And Artorias Are Linked

Speaking of which, it would be impossible to talk about the Abyss without mentioning two of the most popular figures from these areas… who are connected as well, if theories are to be believed.

With the hints present in the game, it’s theorized that the Abyss Watchers worship Artorias — whom they call the Wolf Blood Master — and that they consumed his blood to gain their powers in the first place.

8 The Traps And Enemies In The Duke’s Archives Are To Stop Havel From Reaching Seath

It’s theorized that Havel used to hunt down Seath constantly, to the point where the dragon decided to imprison this warrior and forced him to turn hollow, before locking him up in a tower.

Along with this, he also set up various anti-undead measures to ensure that Havel wouldn’t be able to reach Seath, even in his hollowed form.

7 Aldrich Is In The Process Of Devouring Gwyndolin When You Encounter Him

There’s a reason why Aldrich is called the Devourer of Gods — this entity has consumed a number of gods and obtained their powers, making him an imposing foe indeed.

The fact that he shares a resemblance to Gwyndolin when the Chosen Undead encounters him implies that he had recently consumed Gwyndolin, and was in the process of absorbing his powers around the same time the player happens upon this character.

6 Solaire Is Gwyn’s Firstborn

The theories surrounding Gwyn’s firstborn have been quite rampant, ever since the first Dark Souls. Before the third game in the series, most people were convinced that Solaire was actually Gwyn’s firstborn.

The fact that he worships the sun, has a bunch of cryptic dialogue with wild implications and keeps a ton of suspicious items on his person made him the prime candidate for being the Gwyn’s firstborn.

5 The Nameless King Is Gwyn’s Firstborn

However, with the release of Dark Souls 3 and the introduction of The Nameless King, most people now feel that this character is certainly Gwyn’s firstborn.

It’s theorized that, during the war with the Dragons, Gwyn’s firstborn actually betrayed his kin and decided to side with the dragons. However, the humans were able to emerge victorious anyway, and Gwyn sentenced his son to exile and abolished his name from history altogether.

4 The Player Character Is Gwyn’s Firstborn

The third — and most interesting — candidate for Gwyn’s firstborn is none other than the Chosen Undead himself. This theory has been formed keeping one piece of information at its core — the item descriptions.

There’s no way that any normal human would be aware of the extensive lore surrounding all the items and the stories attached to them in the world of Dark Souls… that is, unless they were educated by a higher being who had the highest probability of knowing all these terms. It goes without saying that Gwyn’s name would be the first to come to anyone’s mind, making the relationship between the Lord and the Chosen Undead all the more intriguing… and saddening.

3 Frampt And Kaathe Don’t Care About The World At All

Even though the primordial serpents might be guiding the Chosen Undead at every step of the way, this isn’t because they actually care whether the fire is lit or not.

Rather, the fact that these serpents have been around for eons implies that they have absolutely no stake in what happens in the world. If there’s one person that should be credited for helping the Chosen Undead with actual intent, it’s the next person on this list.

2 Velka Is The Driving Force Behind The Chosen Undead’s Quest

Unlike the primordial serpents, Velka actually had a reason to hate the Gods of the world — she hated their prideful nature and the heinous things they did to satisfy their egos. Her first attempt to create a cult that would stand against the lords proved to be fruitless, and this cult was abolished to the Painted World.

In a vain second attempt, Velka decided to sleep with a dragon to conceive Priscilla, whom she equipped with a scythe with the sole purpose of killing Gwyn. This proved to be a misguided endeavor as well, since Priscilla was too weak to damage Gwyn while the Lord of Cinder didn’t have the heart to kill a child. So, he decided to banish Priscilla to the Painted World again. Finally, Velka’s third attempt proved to be successful when she managed to pull the strings that would lead the Chosen Undead to amass a ton of power and defeat these Gods in resounding fashion.

1 Dark Souls And Demon’s Souls Exist In The Same Universe

According to a rather popular fan theory, the world of Dark Souls came to be after the fog emanating from the Old One in Demon’s Souls covered the entire world. This turned every being into a demon… except for the dragons, who were powerful enough to bear the effects of the fog and systematically destroyed all the demons in the world. Even the Old One couldn’t bear to fight with the dragons, and turned into a hollow shell over time.

However, after a while, the Old One’s hollow shell crackles with the last vestiges of his life and sets his corpse ablaze, leading to the birth of the First Flame. This is where the world of Dark Souls finally takes shape.
