Dark Souls 3: Slayer Of Aldrich Questline, A Step-By-Step Guide

The world of Dark Souls 3 features many NPCs,  each with their own stories and questlines. The fate of all of these NPCs lies within your hands. They will live, die, succeed, or fail depending on the choices you make. The game never tells you quite what to do though, and as such, it is nearly impossible to know how a choice made by you will play out. Or even if you made a choice.

The Slayer of Aldrich questline follows Anri of Astora and Horace, The Blue Sentinel in their effort to slay Saint Aldrich. Anri was a child of the Cathedral Of The Deep and escaped Aldrich’s clutches even as the children around them were sacrificed to be eaten by Aldrich. Now unkindled, she and her companion, the stubborn silent knight Horace seek to put an end to Aldrich’s scourge. You will run into them a number of times throughout your journey, and this step-by-step guide will tell you exactly what to do for the Slayer Of Aldrich ending to her quest. And of course, major spoilers for Dark Souls 3 ahead.

10 Step 1: The Meeting

You can first meet Anri and Horace at the Halfway Fortress bonfire. They will tell you about what lies ahead, and of their quest, and they will wish you well. It is important to note that Anri will always be the opposite of whatever the layer character’s gender is.

You can also join the Blue Sentinels covenant here, by getting the Covenant item from Horace. However, this has no bearing on the quest.

9 Step 2: Confusion and Manipulation

Your next meeting will come after the Deacons Of The Deep fight. Upon your return to Firelink after killing the Deacons, you will find Anri and Horace standing near Ludleth’s throne. Here, Anri will tell you about their failure to find Aldrich in the Cathedral.

They will say something about a pilgrim telling them about a way to Irithyll through Farron Keep, which is where they will be going next. The pilgrim is a servant of Yuria of Londor and is working to prime Anri for the Lord Of Hollows ending. You will have to forego that and Yuria’s questline for the Slayer of Aldrich ending.

8 Step 3: Separation

You will find Anri, alone, in the Catacombs of Carthus. She will be in a corner on a path leading down from a room guarded by two skeletons with Curved Greatswords. This room is just before the staircase with the rolling Skeleton Ball.

You will find her lamenting her separation from Horace. There is not much you can do here, apart from talking to her. You will find her in the Catacombs again later though.

7 Step 4: Finding Horace

Your second encounter with Anri is in the area near the collapsible wooden bridge. Instead of crossing the bridge, head to the right and you will find a small rock walkway across a chasm. Anri is at the end of this path, still looking for Horace.

If you look down from this position, you will see a drop leading to a pool with items scattered about. That area is roughly where Horace is. Cross the bridge and attack the signposts to make it a makeshift ladder, and descend the ladder to the Smouldering Lake.

6 Step 5: The Smouldering Lake

After the descent, you will find yourself a fire demon. Fight him or run past him, and you will get to an area called The Smouldering Lake. Once you’ve gotten to the Smoldering Lake, move alongside the right wall till you find an alcove.

Horace will be in this alcove as a Hollow, and he will be aggroed. Here, you have a choice. You can either kill him or let him live. If you let him live, there is a chance of him killing Anri. Or, you can kill him. Whichever you choose, find your way back to Anri in the same location afterward.

5 Step 6: Bearer Of Bad News

After meeting the hollowed Horace, make your way back to Anri. When you talk to them, you have an option. Either you could tell them where you found Horace, or not. This is one of the most important choices in the quest.

If you have killed Horace, telling them, or not telling them doesn’t make much of a difference. If you haven’t, however, and tell them where Horace is, they will go to Horace and will be killed by him. This will end the questline, so if you haven’t killed Horace, do not tell Anri where he is.

4  Step 7: Determination

As you continue with your quest, you will find Anri at the Church of Yorshka bonfire in Irythyll of The Boreal Valley. They will tell you that they couldn’t find Horace after all. They will also give you the Ring Of The Evil Eye, and teach you the Quiet Resolve gesture.

Once you leave and reload the area, they will have disappeared from there, and you will find their summon sign before the Pontiff Sullyvahn fog gate.

3 Step 8: Lord No More

This step needs to be completed before the Pontiff Sullyvahn fight. If you fight Sullyvahn before doing this, you will be locked into the Lord Of Hollows storyline, and will not be able to continue this questline.

At the church of Yorshka bonfire, in the corner of the room beside the entrance, there is a pilgrim disguised as the statue. You have to kill this pilgrim. Upon killing, she will drop the Chameleon spell. Killing the pilgrim will also cause Yuria of Londor to leave the Firelink Shrine, and you will not be able to progress her storyline in this playthrough.

2 Step 9: Triumph

If Anri is alive, and the pilgrim was killed before the Pontiff Sullyvahn fight, Anri will be available as a summon to help in your Aldrich fight. However, to continue the quest, you have to find a summon sign next to a prism stone in Anor Londo. It will be in front of the large, golden cathedral doors. Touching this sign will transport you to Anri’s world, where you will fight Aldrich together.

This fight can be tried any number of times, irrespective of yours or Anri’s death until you kill Aldrich together. Remember that killing Aldrich here does not affect the boss in your world. The death of Aldrich only happens in Anri’s world. Talk to them after the quest and you will be transported back to your world.

1 Step 10: The End

When you return to Firelink, talk to Ludleth. He will give you Anri’s Straight Sword, and warn you not to find them. Anri can now be found in two locations, depending on whether you told them of Horace’s death or not. If you did, you will find them, aggroed, in the same place where you found Horace.

If you didn’t, you will find them, aggroed, up on a hill near the Cathedral of The Deep bonfire. They will be at the place where you picked up the Crest Shield, next to a small grave. Their quest complete and their purpose lost, they have hollowed, and cannot tell friend from foe. It is up to you to kill them or let them be, though they will attack.
