Last week, BioWare released an update on the status of Dragon Age 4‘s development. Although the studio emphasized that the game is still in its early stages, the team released several pieces of DA4 concept art, which are enough to give players an insight on what to expect from the upcoming installment, especially the role Solas will play in Dragon Age 4.
However, one important information about the game still remains a mystery: its setting and location. Throughout the Dragon Age franchise, players followed the stories of The Warden, The Champion of Kirkwall, and The Inquisitor, which all took place in various places throughout the continent of Thedas. However, fans are probably wondering which specific nation in Thedas will Dragon Age 4 take place, and at the moment, all signs appear to point to the Tevinter Imperium.
It is important for players to remember that the notion of Tevinter being the primary setting of Dragon Age 4 is still just a theory, but it is a pretty well-supported one. Of course, the most important clue suggesting that the upcoming will see players travel and explore the oldest human nation in Thedas is the ending of Dragon Age Inquisition.
During the final sequence of the Trespasser DLC, Solas and the Inquisitor crossed paths again, which led to the Inquisitor losing their arm and Solas regaining the power of the Anchor. In the last cutscene, the Inquisitor is seen meeting up with their advisors as they question how they will find Solas. The Inquisitor replied saying that “we will stop Solas by any means necessary” before stabbing a map on the war table directly on top of Tevinter Imperium, suggesting that this will be the location of the next game.
Of course, apart from the obvious clue left by BioWare in the Trespasser DLC for Dragon Age Inquisition, there are also other theories that support Tevinter as the next primary location for Dragon Age 4. As one of the most powerful magic-based locations in the game, where better for Solas to unleash his plan?
To the uninitiated, Tevinter used to be the most powerful nation in Thedas and us ruled by an influential and powerful magocracy, and its leaders are made up of magisters led by the Imperial Archon. Moreover, Tevinter Imperium is one of the last major nations in Thedas that the games have yet to explore given that Origins was set in Ferelden, Dragon Age 2 in the City of Kirkwall in The Free Marches, and Dragon Age Inquisition switching back and forth between Orlais and Ferelden. There’s Antiva, Nevarra, and others for sure, but Tevinter has come up far more in the overarching story.
Having said this, Tevinter Imperium is likely to be Dragon Age 4’s next setting not only because of the obvious foreshadowing at the end of Inquisition but also because of the nation’s deep magical roots and its importance to the overall history of Thedas. Of course, while the notion of Tevinter as the primary setting of Dragon Age 4 is all but confirmed, there is still a possibility that BioWare may decide to take a different direction and bring players to a different area altogether. Hopefully, more info will be revealed soon, but since Dragon Age 4 is still in its early stages of development, despite being announced almost two years ago, it is likely that it would be some time before BioWare will be willing to share any significant information about Dragon Age 4.
Dragon Age 4 is currently in development.
