Cass is one of the companions the player can recruit in Fallout: New Vegas. She is a merchant who worked inside the New California Republic until her caravan was destroyed. She can be found inside the Mojave Outpost drinking her sorrows away. By passing a speech check or by giving her whiskey, players are able to travel the Mojave Wasteland with Cass.
Naturally, players will discover bits of information about Cass as she wanders the wastes alongside them. Some information comes from her past, while other bits of information are related to her career as a merchant. Interestingly enough, some facts about Cass may never be known by certain players, so we’ve gathered some of the least known among them.
10 Father Is John Cassidy
John Cassidy is a potential companion for the player in Fallout 2. As mentioned by Cass, her father left her after a couple of years and ventured off to find Texas. He was never heard of again, and Cass was raised by her mother.
Cass took after her father and started to travel around the wasteland. The pendant that Cass wears comes from her father, explaining why she prefers to wear it.
9 Can Be Eaten By Cannibals
During the quest Beyond the Beef, players are given the less-than-savory option to sell one of their companions to the White Glove Society. The group will kill and cook the companion. If Cass is sold, there is some interesting dialogue that comes with the deal.
The White Glove member will mention they can skip the whiskey marinating and that the liver is not usable at all, obviously referencing Cass’s drinking. It is entertaining to hear the cook say this, but the player will lose her as a companion.
8 Could Have Been Married In Cut Content
There was a plan for the Courier and Cass to be able to get married in New Vegas. It was planned for the player to wake up next to Cass, drunk and married. The King would have officiated, singing an Elvis song during the proceedings.
It would have been an interesting and entertaining turn of events, as that would mean the player could have actually gotten married in the game. Despite what Cass says, it’s certainly implied that Cass does have feelings for the Courier. So it does actually make sense, context and all.
7 Was A Water Merchant
It is known that Cass was a merchant before her caravan was attacked. What players might not have known is what kind of merchant Cass was. It is revealed she was a water merchant, bringing purified water from the Mojave Wasteland to the New California Republic.
She only found out her caravan was destroyed when NCR Rangers came back to report it. Despite the caravan being destroyed, Cass continues to resist the idea of selling her company, so it was obviously a vocation she took pride in.
6 Appears Blonde On Playing Card
In the game, Cass can be seen with red hair. On the playing cards that come with the Collector’s Edition of the game, Cass has blonde hair instead. This could mean that she was actually originally intended to be blonde in the concept stages of her development.
Besides the hair, the Cass seen on the card looks pretty similar to her in-game counterpart. Whether this was a mistake the card maker made or if Cass was originally blonde is unknown.
5 Full Name Is Rose Of Sharon Cassidy
Cass is most known by fans of the game as ‘Cass.’ This is not her full name, as the entirety of it is Rose of Sharon Cassidy. She can be heard saying she is named after the character from John Steinbeck’s book The Grapes of Wrath.
Cass describes the book as an Old World book about dirt pilgrims. It would seem that her father was a fan of the book and told his daughter about it. The name also fits her, as her mother was a tribal.
4 Will Drink Whiskey If Put In Her Inventory
Cass is a fan of whiskey, with it being her favorite drink. If players put a full bottle of whiskey in her inventory, Cass will drink it and leave behind an empty bottle. Players who are trying to save a bottle of whiskey for themselves or for a quest should look out for this.
It is an interesting detail, as players who are not on the lookout for it will most likely not notice it. Just don’t get mad at Cass for drinking your whiskey – you should’ve known better.
3 Can Be Challenged To Drinking Game
Cass enjoys drinking quite a bit, and players can challenge her to a drinking game. Having at least 6 endurance will cause the Courier to lose, but Cass will compliment them on their fortitude. If they have 8 Endurance or higher, there can be another outcome.
With high enough Endurance, the Courier can beat Cass and outdrink her. Cass will become drunk and tell the Courier and their friends (since Cass is experiencing double-vision) to leave her alone. While beating someone in a drinking competition wins questionable bragging rights, they are bragging rights nonetheless.
2 Hostile To Players If Labeled NCR Terrorist
Like most companions in New Vegas, Cass will have a limit when it comes to faction interaction. If the player killed the NCR ambassador and gets labeled as a terrorist, Cass will become hostile to the player. This means she can no longer be recruited or travel with the Courier.
In this instance, Cass may also ambush the player when they fast travel to a location. Players will start to be shot at from an unknown location, with the shooter turning out to be Cass herself. Players can either run away or kill their old traveling companion.
1 Cannot Use Chems Because Of Heart Problems
Much like her father, Cass is not able to use chems because of a heart problem. If the player talks to Cass while under the influence of chems, she will show her disgust. This also means the player cannot get her to use any chems.
Despite showing disgust, Cass will not leave the Courier or threaten to leave the player. It also means Cass can be used to store Chems without the worry of her using them.
