2020 is proving to be a very good year for the cult-favorite video game series, Shantae. First, it was announced that the latest game in the series is going multi-platform, and now it’s been announced that the original game is being re-released for the Nintendo Game Boy Color.
While the Shantae games aren’t as well known as some other platformers, like the Mario or Sonic franchises, they do have a devoted following. The first game in the series, simply called Shantae, was released for the Game Boy Color back in 2002. In it, players control a half-genie named Shantae who has to save her village from a group of evil pirates. The game proved popular enough to spawn four sequels of varying popularity.
What makes this re-release special is that it’s going to be released as a physical game for the Game Boy Color. While most companies have long since abandoned releasing games for older systems, instead choosing to port old games to newer systems, there is one company dedicated to keeping old hardware alive. That company is Limited Run Games, and it specializes in physical releases og indie games and re-releases of older games.
For players who want to dig their old Game Boy Color out of the back of the closet, Shantae will be available for pre-order starting at 10am ET on Friday, September 11th. There will be a four week pre-order period, and fans who want to get their hands on the game are encouraged to pre-order, as there will be a limited print run. They can also pick up a gorgeous Shantae art book while they’re at it.
Shantae is available for Game Boy Color.
