Marvel’s Avengers: Who is Kate Bishop? | Game Rant

The launch edition of a new Marvel’s Avengers War Table stream gave players one final look at the game and what they can expect when the game is fully available this week. Players got a better look at new in-game activities such as season and weekly Events, the SHIELD Substation Zero social space, and even special modes like the challenging Secret Labs and Mega HIVES.

However, the biggest revelations from the latest War Table involved post-launch plans. While Black Panther was seemingly confirmed, though held back due to the death of prolific actor Chadwick Boseman, the stream instead revealed the first post-launch character addition in Kate Bishop. The announcement likely came as a bit of a shock to fans as the last War Table revealed Hawkeye and likely misled fans into thinking Clint Barton would be first to join the roster.

As a newer Marvel character, Kate Bishop may not be as well known as the current members of the Avengers or even Hawkeye himself. While the two character are similar in the fact that they’re both archers, Kate brings her own unique skillset and history to Marvel’s Avengers. Here’s everything players need to know about the newer Hawkeye, Kate Bishop.

Katherine Bishop made her debut in the April 2005 edition of Young Avengers from writer Allan Heinberg and artist Jim Cheung. Her home life growing up wasn’t typical as her father was emotionally distant, her mother was estranged from him, and her relationship with her sister Susan was more tense than anything else. After catching her father beating up another person late at night in his study, Kate decided to investigate what exactly he did to make so much money. Eventually, she came in contact with the villain known as Manuel ‘El Matador’ Eloganto.

After being caught, she was held for ransom though the Avengers arrived on scene to save her. While the heroes left a mark on the young girl, it was Hawkeye who impressed her the most as unlike the others, he was a normal guy with no powers who had to rely solely on skill. With her father largely a disappointment, she looked to Hawkeye as a role model. Uncomfortable with her family’s questionable wealth, Kate instead gave back to the community by spending time at shelters and soup kitchens.

During this time, Kate was also assaulted one night in Central Park. While the event traumatized her, it also motivated her to get stronger. She took up training in hand to hand combat and self-defense techniques. Before long, she becoming proficient at various forms of combat including martial arts and archery.

Her first contact with the superhero group known as the Young Avengers came at her sister’s wedding. After a botched rescue attempt which only made matters worse, Bishop proved her skill and calm under fire by using one of Patriot’s throwing stars to thwart the attack and end the hostage situation. Along with Cassie Lang, Kate became a permanent member of the team, using gear from other heroes like Mockingbird, Black Widow, and the bow from Hawkeye.

The Young Avengers were eventually disbanded by the actual Avengers though it didn’t stop Kate and a few members from continuing their activities. Using some of her family’s wealth, Kate was able to find a new lair as well as gear for the remaining members. Unfortunately, not having proper training resulted in a injury to Patriot and Captain America informing the team that they need to stop. Kate stood up to Captain America, telling him that if he had trained the team, Patriot wouldn’t have suffered. She continued to stand up to the legendary hero, telling him that the best thing to do would be to help and accept them.

Standing up to him the way she did left an impression on Captain America as the only other person to have done that was Clint Barton himself. While Clint was seemingly dead at this point, Captain America gifted his gear to Kate along with the codename Hawkeye.

After some time adjusting to be a new Hawkeye, the original one returns from the dead thanks to a complicated event involving Scarlet Witch and her ability to delete and remake worlds at will. During the events of Civil War, Clint took up the mantle of Captain America for a short time, which did not sit well with Kate. After attempting to capture Hawkeye and Patriot for not being registered, Kate unloads on Clint stating that the only reason why she took the codename of Hawkeye was to honor him, but copying his look would be shameful. This conversation leads to Clint abandoning the idea of being Captain America and instead turn away from Tony Stark’s ideals.

Returning to his alter ego Ronin, Clint would continually test Hawkeye who eventually reveals himself to be Clint Barton and ultimately passes the Hawkeye torch to her officially. Over time, Clint goes on to take Kate under his wing as his protege. The duo would undertake many missions together, taking down all sorts of crime, organized groups, and even battling the Skrulls. One thing that didn’t change was the different personalities of Kate and Clint, with the former eventually growing frustrated by the latter’s more reckless behavior. Throughout numerous story arcs, the duo go through their ups and downs, though they always end up reuniting to do what’s right.

Currently, Kate has moved back to Los Angeles where she’s set up her own detective agency called Hawkeye Investigations.

After her debut trailer in the War Table stream, Crystal Dynamics hasn’t said much about the upcoming character. Voiced by veteran actor Ashly Burch, Bishop appears to resemble her comic book counterpart in many ways, not just with her equipment but also her outfits shown in the trailer.

As previously mentioned, Crystal Dynamics seems to have taken a lot of inspiration from the Matt Fraction comics for both Hawkeyes, where the duo focus less on being superheroes and more on stopping lower levels of crime instead. During this run, the pair maintain a strong mentor/student relationship, which was also hinted at in the Kate Bishop trailer. Her tale will actually continue the mainline story, giving players a glimpse of where the game goes once the mainline credits roll.

Marvel’s Avengers will release for PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One on September 4th, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X releases to follow later in the year.
