Nvidia GeForce 3090 Graphics Card Brings Tons of Power to PC Gaming

All of Nvidia’s efforts on the powerful new GeForce RTX 30 series have been focused on two key elements: performing as many calculations per second without melting, and delivering those calculations to the output device accurately and quickly.

Nvidia’s Ampere Archetecture is designed to draw up to 400W of electrical power and turn it into 30 Shader-TFLOPS and 238 Tensor-TFLOPS of processing power at data speeds of up to 1 TB/s system memory bandwidth for graphics applications, such as when rendering the gameplay trailer for Cyberpunk 2077.

Without the support of the heat sink, the GPU would run at roughly 760 degrees Celsius (1400 degrees Fahrenheit), at least until the aluminum started to melt. Nvidia‘s dedicated RT cores and tensor cores deliver twice the throughput of the previous generation, and are designed to work efficiently with the latest AI programming. The card boasts data speeds of close to 1TB/s system memory bandwidth for graphics card applications.

The designers at Nvidia had to contend with all of this while also attempting to create as sleek a profile as possible. One big change made for the GeForce 3090 was to the springs holding the cooling solution to the GPU, which are traditionally round conical coils. Nvidia’s new square leaf spring design holds the solution in place with a steady pressure without a large profile. Dual fans keep air flow running smoothly.

It will be up to CPU manufacturers to keep up with Nvidia’s latest innovations, particularly in regards to the Nvidia RTX IO, which together with Microsoft’s new DirectStorage for Windows API takes computational load off the CPU by taking over certain physics-based processes. AI-powered technology like DLSS 2.0, which ironically uses less ray-tracing information to produce clearer results, should run smoothly on the card. And as it’s paired with 24GB of GDDR6X memory, this is a video card that should deliver promising results.

Some have expressed concern that the price tag on the Nvidia RTX 3090 is a bit steep. However, it is likely that a lot of esports players and content creators will be willing to invest in this latest technology in order to reduce latency and speed up rendering time. In addition, this generation of Nvidia graphics cards is coming with a lot of advanced tools which can do things like cut out background sounds and visuals in a recording.

Gamers will have to wait until September 24th before they can get a good look at how the GeForce RTX 3090 performs outside of rumored performance benchmarks. Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang is optimistic, and claims the second half of 2020 will be the “best gaming season ever.”

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card will release on September 24, 2020.
