Last year, Activision released Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled, a remake of the 1999 original that polished up Naughty Dog’s classic racing game for the modern-day, not to mention introduced new content of its own. Sadly for fans of Crash Bandicoot and kart-racers, it’s been months since any additional content was released, and this week it was revealed why.
Developer Beenox brought plenty of DLC to Nitro-Fueled in the months following its launch last June. This consisted of things like Grand Prix events, new modes, and a slew of cosmetic items, as well as the introduction of new characters, including Spyro the Dragon. However, that steady stream of new content suddenly ceased with the release of the Beenox Pack back in March, and with the radio silence that has followed in the months since, fans have been wondering if that’s it for the game’s DLC.
According to Beenox, it is. On Twitter this week, the developer confirmed that there will be no more updates for Nitro-Fueled. “We’ve been getting quite a few comments asking for more new content for CTR. We’re thrilled that you all are still enjoying the game,” it wrote in its statement. “Unfortunately the March update with the Beenox Pack was our final update to the game and there is no additional content in the works.”
Beenox explained that the reason for that is because it has moved on to other projects, but the good news for Crash fans is that one of these is designing the N.Verted Mode for Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time. As the name suggests, this mode will tweak the levels of next month’s sequel with a variety of different graphical styles and gameplay-altering mechanics. It sounds like a rather big undertaking, so it’s understandable that Beenox is leaving CTR behind to focus on that.
That said, the developer stated that Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled will continue on in its current state, meaning things like online multiplayer, leaderboards, and the Pit Stop will remain available to players. In closing, it said, “Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for the love and support for this game.”
The way the DLC built upon Naughty Dog’s original foundation is one of the reasons CTR: Nitro-Fueled has been well-received among players. No doubt, fans will be sad to see support for it end after less than a year, but at least it was a solid run, and at least Crash fans only have to wait a few more weeks for the first brand new game in years.
Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled is available for PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
