Magic: The Gathering has been around for just shy of 30 years at this point and the evolution of the booster pack has come a long way. For a long time boosters have been defined by the draft format, but that is no longer the case thanks to some booster variation and the option to purchase Set Boosters rather than Draft Boosters.
Draft boosters stick to the old formula (which is usually 10 commons, 3 uncommons, 1 rare/mythic rare, 1 land, chance for a foil), which is necessary to provide a balanced Limited environment. Set Boosters, on the other hand, have the freedom to play around with themed groups of cards that tell more of a story, since players won’t just be selecting one card and passing the rest along. Zendikar Rising brings one of the first chances for consumers to really dive into set boosters and the recent Magic: The Gathering livestream reveal event gave us a closer look at exactly how these packs will work.
As expected, the Zendikar Rising livestream event was full of spoilers and information about both the upcoming fall set and the next year of Magic: The Gathering. The Set Boosters also made a brief appearance and fans of Zendikar will likely be excited to notice a spot in the packs dedicated to full are basic land cards with the chance for a possible foil, as well…
The Set Booster follows a new formula that is meant to help each pack tell a unique story. The idea is that each pack is broken into the following chapters: Welcome, Fireworks, Big Finish, and Epilogue. We knew these chapters were coming, but now we can see exactly what they mean for Zendikar Rising. The art cards provide an interesting new collectible aspect to boosters (as if Magic players needed something else to collect), but don’t provide any real impact on gameplay. The full are lands are sure to be fan favorites once again and the showcase/modal double-faced card spot should do a nice job featuring the set’s core themes and mechanics. Obviously the real excitement comes with the guaranteed foil and the rare/mythic rare spot for most players.
These new packs are a very interesting experiment and they definitely seem like a win-win for the Magic Community. Once players start tearing into them later this month, there will surely be plenty of feedback that can help influence any changes that might come to Set Boosters for future packs throughout Magic’s exciting year in 2021.
In the coming days, we should learn a ton more about Zendikar Rising spoilers, mechanics, and more. Start studying early so that you’ll be prepared for a new standard rotation and the upcoming draft format.
