Portable GameCube Model Leaks | Game Rant

Nintendo has been responsible for many enjoyable consoles and games. While not every console the company has produced has been a huge hit, most have managed to attract a dedicated fan base and this has undoubtedly allowed Nintendo to achieve incredible success. Naturally, not all console concepts make it to production and a leak now reveals a very interesting set of plans for what would essentially be a portable version of the widely enjoyed Nintendo GameCube.

The original GameCube was released in 2001 and competed with the likes of the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox. While for many the console did not outshine its competition, the GameCube did have quality games that included successful franchises such as Zelda, Metroid Prime, and a host of Mario titles. It now seems that there were plans to bring this technology to a portable market and many are already claiming that it may have given the likes of the PSP tough competition.

The portable version of the console would have supported “external controllers” as well as memory storage, network capabilities, and a “mini-DVD drive.” These features sound exciting alongside the quality of the console that many enjoyed originally. There has been some debate after the leak was posted about how the games themselves would be stored but a prevalent theory is that flash memory would be used as Nintendo was already investing in the technology at the time. The rectangular portable system could have undoubtedly made a huge impact on the portable gaming market but it is important to remember that the direction Nintendo decided to take also proved incredibly popular.

Rather than produce this console the company instead released the Nintendo DS, which had great games and sold very well. While many would have liked to see the qualities of the GameCube on a portable device, the ease of the DS and its dual-screen feature made it a stand out console on the portable market. In a commercial sense, Nintendo likely made the right decision to pursue the Nintendo DS rather than an alternative. Despite the success of the DS many will be curious to see what the portable GameCube would have looked like, and dedicated fans will likely begin searching for more information on this mysterious concept.

Nintendo has been involved with unreleased consoles before and this is unsurprising given how long the company has developed them. Nonetheless, this concept has piqued the interest of many fans and it will be intriguing to see if any more information about the portable GameCube comes to light in the future.
