Positive Coronavirus Test Brings The Batman to a Halt – UPDATED

UPDATE: According to Vanity Fair, the crew member who tested positive for coronavirus was Robert Pattinson. Though still unconfirmed by Warner Bros and Pattinson’s representative, Vanity Fair is reporting the news has come from highly placed sources. Original news post continues below.

After recently returning to filming, production has been suspended again on The Batman after a crew member tested positive for coronavirus.

Confirming the news, a Warner Bros spokesperson said “A member of The Batman production has tested positive for Covid-19 and is isolating in accordance with established protocols filming is temporarily paused.” The suspension comes after several months of delays after initial filming was shut down due to the COVID pandemic with only 3 weeks worth of footage shot, though Warner Bros are hopeful that filming will be completed by the end of the year providing there’s no further positive cases on set.

With its release pushed back from the original date of June 2021 to October, The Batman was one of many productions to fall foul of the current pandemic lockdown. This latest suspension comes as a blow after the first teaser was shown at DC’s online FanDome event to an almost universally positive reception. Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan shared his excitement for Matt Reeves’ film in an interview with Entertainment Tonight saying “having worked with Rob [Pattinson], I can say with total confidence that he can do absolutely anything he sets his mind to and I could not be more excited to see what he does with Batman.”

Directed by  Matt Reeves, known for Cloverfield, Let Me In, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Batman stars Twilight actor Robert Pattinson as billionaire and part time vigilante Bruce Wayne with Paul Dano stepping into the shoes of the Riddler. The film also features Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin and Westworld star Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon. Other DCEU films affected by the pandemic are Shazam 2 which has been moved to November 2022, Black Adam which is set to start filming in 2021 and The Flash which has been moved a month forward to June 2022.

The Batman is expected to premiere in October 2021.
